Hip pain when sitting is a symptom of what disease?

Poor sitting posture, sciatica, tendonitis and arthritis are common causes of hip pain.

The hip joint is where the top of the thigh bone meets part of the pelvis. Hip pain occurs when the muscles in the hip are overworked, leading to pain and discomfort in the hip joint for many reasons.

Tendonitis

Tendons are the tissues that connect muscles in the body to bones. Inflammation of the tendons in the hips causes pain when sitting. Symptoms of tendinitis include swelling, lumps or nodules, tender skin, and pain when moving, lasting from days to months.

Pain can be well controlled if the patient gets enough rest and does physical therapy. When the patient is in too much pain, the doctor may prescribe appropriate medication or surgery.

Arthritis

Hip arthritis occurs when the protective cartilage in the hip socket wears away over time. This causes the bone to become exposed, causing pain when moving, sitting, or exercising. Hip strengthening exercises can help relieve pain. In severe cases, surgery may be needed.

Sciatica

Sciatica is a pain that starts in the lower back and then spreads down the lower body. This pain is often caused by a herniated disc or bone spurs in the spine that compresses the nerve fibers, causing pain in the hips when sitting.

Sciatica patients are often prescribed pain relievers, physical therapy, and acupuncture by their doctors. Patients can apply ice packs for 20 minutes at a time, massage, practice yoga, and avoid standing or sitting for too long.

Bursitis

Bursae are small fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction between tendons and bones. When these sacs accumulate too much fluid, they become inflamed and painful. They can also affect the hips, causing discomfort when sitting.

People with the disease for the first time should apply cold compresses to the painful area, do it for one hour each time, twice a day. When the pain recurs, it can be replaced with hot compresses. If the pain persists, the patient should go to the hospital early for a doctor to diagnose and treat.

Sitting in the wrong position

Sitting hunched over, crossing your legs, leaning to one side, or sitting on an uneven surface can put pressure on your hips, leading to hip pain when sitting. Perform hip stretches, some yoga poses help relieve tension in the hip muscles.

Piriformis syndrome

The piriformis muscle is a flat muscle located above the buttocks, next to the hip joint. Piriformis syndrome occurs when this muscle becomes irritated and contracted, which compresses the sciatic nerve, causing pain or numbness in the buttocks, hips, or legs.

To relieve pain and prevent piriformis syndrome, exercise regularly and keep your back and head in a straight line when sitting, driving, or standing. Stand up, walk, or do stretching exercises when sitting for long periods of time.
