Swinging (also known as swinging) - a long-standing folk game, closely associated with the daily life and work of the Muong, Dao, and Cao Lan people. This game is often held on New Year's Eve or during annual festivals; it is a "spiritual food" for people to have fun, socialize, and make friends with the participation of many young men and women.

Spring Swing

Ethnic minorities in Doan Hung district organize swing games on every festival and New Year occasion.

Swinging is usually organized on a flat, spacious piece of land. In the middle of the land, a bamboo swing with 3 main parts: The top (also known as the upper swing, has the task of connecting the two swing pillars together); the pillar (consisting of 4 large, sturdy bamboo trees buried deep into the ground in a tripod position, gathered at the top of the swing); the body (a vertical rectangle, with a swing table underneath for players to put their feet on when swinging)... is sturdy and solid and will be erected. In the countryside, the steps of making a swing are often assigned to experienced middle-aged men. When completed, the swing must undergo many rigorous tests to ensure its sturdiness, withstand the weight of the swinger and the thrust during the swinging process.

Swinging has a fairly simple way of playing and rules. When starting, the player will stand on the rope, put one foot on the ground to push to gain momentum or ask someone standing outside to push the swing to gain momentum in the first beat. When the swing has flown high, the player only needs to adjust his posture, hold the swing with both hands and bounce lightly in each beat to swing up. Whoever swings at the highest position (equal to the height of the top of the swing) or has the highest number of swings will win. There are two forms of swinging: single swing (1 person) and double swing (male - female).

In addition to being a sport, swinging is also a game that challenges the courage of the players when swinging high and trains the flexibility and dexterity to swing rhythmically. In addition, swinging is also known as the "love match" game, the pairing of many young men and women, because during the participation, the players need to coordinate well and rhythmically to swing high. Therefore, the game is not only attractive to the participants but also attracts the audience to watch and cheer.

Mr. Dinh Van Chien (Vo Tranh commune, Ha Hoa district) said: For the Muong people, swinging is not only a folk game for entertainment but also a way for people to express their wishes for a new year of prosperity, happiness, growth of all things, and bountiful harvests with the earth and sky. The swing flies up and down, then soars into the air, symbolizing the interaction and operation of yin and yang, the earth and sky. With profound humanistic values, swinging is a beautiful cultural feature of important significance in the lives of the people of my hometown, bringing joy and excitement to everyone. If we don't play swinging, the holidays and Tet will not be truly complete.
