Support sika deer breeding for farmers, improve quality of life

In 2024, Thanh Son District People's Committee handed over 102 spotted deer for antlers, with a total cost of nearly 3 billion VND (the State supported 95%, the people contributed 5%) to the people of Yen Luong commune.

This is a project model to support economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas under the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction for the 2021-2025 period.

Participating in the poverty reduction support project is this deer antler farming model with 34 households, including 7 poor households, 17 near-poor households, 3 households that have just escaped poverty and 7 households with good economic performance confirmed by Yen Luong commune.

Accordingly, each household will be supported with 3 sika deer for breeding. In addition to the support capital from the poverty reduction program, households will participate in matching funds including building barns, livestock equipment, mixed concentrate feed, green feed, livestock disease vaccines and breeding costs.

Mr. Dinh Van Tien - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Yen Luong Commune (Thanh Son District, Phu Tho Province) said that Yen Luong is a particularly difficult commune of Thanh Son District. Currently, the commune has established a cooperative group to raise spotted deer for velvet with a herd of up to 112 deer, owned by 34 households.

The cooperative group raising spotted deer for velvet operates under the "5 together, 5 self" mechanism (in which 5 together - same production field, same concern, same experience sharing, same responsibility and same benefit; "5 self" - voluntary, self-conscious, self-reliant, self-managed, self-responsible).

Ms. Vu Thi Hoat (Zone 5, Yen Luong Commune) is an active member of the Cooperative Group for raising spotted deer for velvet. Ms. Hoat has limited health and comes from a poor family. Thanks to the propaganda, "hand-holding" of the Farmers' Association and the support of capital, breeding animals, technical guidance on raising and selling deer velvet from the breeding group, she has boldly invested in and maintained raising 2 spotted deer for velvet.

"Up to now, both sika deer have been regularly harvesting antlers, bringing in a revenue of 40 million VND per year.

This is a significant source of income, helping to improve the quality of life and buy more essential items for daily life.

Previously, I would never have had a few million dong saved up. From the income from selling deer antlers, I have some extra money to go to a high-level medical facility for treatment. Therefore, my health has improved a lot, my spirit is also more comfortable and happy...", Ms. Hoat happily said.

Ms. Hoat's initial success in economic development not only demonstrates the farmer's spirit of overcoming difficulties but also shows the opportunity to start a business from the deer breeding model in the mountainous district of Phu Tho.

Farmer Do Van Luyen's household (in zone 5, Yen Luong commune) is one of the first households to pioneer the deer farming movement in the locality.

Starting in 2021, he invested 60 million VND to buy 2 breeding sika deer; spent another 20 million to build solid barns to ensure a living environment for the deer.

New rural construction associated with sustainable poverty reduction

By learning from the deer farming experience of other local households and through books and newspapers, Mr. Luyen has reaped "sweet fruits". In 2021, two deer produced 800 grams of deer antlers, with a selling price of 2 million VND/tael, he earned 16 million VND.

"This is a significant profit in the early stages, a great motivation for the family to continue developing the model and sharing experiences with members in the region.

Currently, the family's herd of spotted deer raised for velvet antlers has increased to 4, generating a steady profit of more than 50 million VND per year, and will certainly continue to increase income in the coming years...", Mr. Luyen said.

According to Mr. Luyen, sika deer are easy to raise and have few diseases. Due to the high initial capital required to buy deer for breeding, people face difficulties. For poor households, it is even more difficult to have the opportunity to access this model of raising deer for antlers.

From the practical support resources from the Central Government, together with the synchronously implemented solutions, which have brought high efficiency, Thanh Son mountainous district has achieved many positive results in implementing the sustainable poverty reduction program associated with new rural construction. "Thanks to the support of breeding animals from the State's poverty reduction program, along with the cooperative's livestock and sales linkage, many farmers, especially poor households in Yen Luong commune, have had the opportunity to be given a livelihood - sika deer for antlers to raise.

This is a very timely and necessary "fishing rod" for the poor, a way for people in particularly difficult mountainous rural areas such as Yen Luong commune to have more job opportunities; proactively and confidently develop livestock production, create steady and stable income each year, contribute to self-compensation, improve the quality of life, and make life more prosperous and happier...", Mr. Luyen shared.

Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Yen Luong Commune, Dinh Van Tien, informed that a sika deer brings in an income of 8-20 million VND/year, depending on the antler yield. With a life cycle of 15-20 years, sika deer produce a steady antler yield every year, helping people quickly recover their capital.

"With the support of the Farmers' Association and the spirit of "5 self, 5 together", the model of the Cooperative Group raising spotted deer for velvet promises to be replicated in the coming time. This is a potential direction to help farmers rise up to become rich sustainably, contributing significantly to the construction of new rural areas in Thanh Son district in particular and Phu Tho province in general", Mr. Tien emphasized.

Identifying poverty reduction as a key task to ensure social security, in recent years, Yen Luong commune, Thanh Son district has implemented many synchronous and effective solutions to help poor and near-poor households have opportunities to develop the economy, create jobs, and increase income.

By the end of 2024, the entire Yen Luong commune will have 1,875 workers with regular jobs, 230 trained workers... The commune government has effectively coordinated with credit institutions in the district to create conditions for people to borrow more than 8 billion VND of preferential credit capital to develop production, invest, expand production and business...

Thanks to the implementation of synchronous solutions, the poverty rate in the commune has decreased to 16.4%, and the number of near-poor households is 21.47%.

Mr. Dinh Van Phong - Chairman of Yen Luong Commune People's Committee said: In the coming time, the commune will continue to enhance the role and responsibility of the Party Committee, government, and mass organizations to arouse the will and aspiration to escape poverty of the people; effectively integrate resources from the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction to support production development, create livelihoods, help people escape poverty sustainably; contribute to effectively building new rural areas in the locality.
