The product is referred to simply as Surface Laptop (dropping the numbering convention of its predecessor and replacing the enterprise-focused Surface Laptop 6 launched earlier this year) in marketing materials and press releases, but Microsoft's website lists it as "Surface Laptop 7th Edition".
The new Surface Laptop comes in 13.8-inch or 15-inch display options.
Despite its name, the new Surface Laptop is available in 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes. On the outside, it closely resembles the MacBook Air, with a large trackpad, aluminum chassis, and ultra-slim fanless design. It also starts at 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, with options that go up to 64GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. The 64GB model is only available for pre-order.
The most notable part of this Surface Laptop is the Snapdragon X chip, which offers 80% faster performance than previous Surface Laptop models, partly due to thermal management, and can provide up to 22 hours of battery life for local video playback. Customers can choose between the Snapdragon X Plus or X Elite chip, depending on the performance they need.
The Snapdragon X offers some AI (artificial intelligence) advantages, allowing Microsoft to call the new Surface Laptop an AI PC, bringing some new Copilot+ PC functions like the Recall tool that can retrieve everything a user has done on their PC.
The new Surface Laptop looks a lot like the MacBook Air
If all goes well, this could be a game changer for Microsoft, Windows, and PCs in general. The Snapdragon X processor eschews the typical x86 architecture in favor of ARM, an architecture typically reserved for smartphones. Creating an ARM chip that can compete with Intel or AMD CPUs is a daunting task, but it offers the advantage of power efficiency, allowing Surface Laptops or MacBook Airs to deliver all-day battery life in a compact, fanless design.
This also allows Microsoft to reduce its reliance on Intel as the x86 world stagnates with only minor performance improvements on top-end CPUs. ARM development is much more open than x86 and has accelerated in recent years. Even though x86 is still the standard for Windows desktops, Microsoft’s use of the Snapdragon X will put some heat on Intel.
The new Surface Laptop starts at $1,000, with pre-orders now open and a June 18 release date.
