Ecuador : A 76-year-old woman who regained consciousness during her funeral and banged on her coffin last week died of a stroke on June 16.
Retired nurse Bella Montoya was taken to a hospital in the central Ecuadorian city of Babahoyo on June 9 after suffering a stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest. Hours later, doctors pronounced her dead and handed the death certificate to her son, Gilbert Barbera.
As her family held her funeral, Ms. Montoya banged on the coffin to signal that she was still alive. Video posted on social media last week showed her lying in the coffin, breathing heavily as two men supported her.

After waking up, Ms. Montoya was taken to the Babahoyo City Hospital. The regional health agency said she died of a stroke on June 16.
“This time my mother really died,” Barbera said. “My life will never be the same again.”
Ecuador’s health ministry is investigating the doctors who issued Montoya’s initial death certificate. Local media reported that she suffered from catalepsy, a condition that causes people to lose sensation and consciousness and become rigid.
