Over the past 10 years, the Vietnamese transportation market has witnessed an explosion of technology applications. Apps have not only brought a new "wind" of convenience in travel but also changed consumer habits, creating great opportunities for the transportation industry.

In 2014, Grab and Uber entered Vietnam, when the passenger transport market was still dominated by traditional taxis and spontaneous motorbike taxis.

The emergence of technology-based ride-hailing apps has changed the way Vietnamese people travel. With a few taps on their phones, users can easily book a ride, track their journey, know the fare in advance, and make flexible payments.

Change "hailing" and "call center"

Mr. Nguyen Van Binh (35 years old, an office worker in Hanoi) shared that before when calling a taxi, he often had to stand on the side of the road to hail a car, not knowing the price and sometimes being yelled at. "Since there are technology cars, everything is more transparent, I always know the fare in advance," he said.

Many customers recognize that Vietnam's transportation industry has never developed as diversely and strongly as it does today.

Traditional taxi companies have also had to change. The director of a taxi company in Ho Chi Minh City said that at first they suffered heavy losses. However, after applying technology and improving services, customers started to return.

Competition between traditional taxis and technology taxis has created many great benefits for consumers. Fares are more transparent, service quality is improved and waiting times are shortened.

"Thanks to competition, customers can choose a nice car and know the price before deciding to travel - something they could hardly do before" - Ms. Hoang Thu Huong, 28 years old, Ho Chi Minh City, said.

Ms. Huong believes that current technology apps meet many of her needs such as going to work, ordering food, going to the market and sending goods. The drivers are friendly, the cars are clean and the service is transparent.

As the current Grab application does not only stop at improving the travel experience but also expands its services to other areas such as food delivery (GrabFood), grocery shopping (GrabMart), and shipping (GrabExpress).

Promoting the "sharing economy" in Vietnam

The sharing economy model has become an inevitable trend in the 4.0 era, and Grab is one of the representatives in Vietnam. This application has helped to utilize social resources, create new value chains and bring income opportunities to many workers, from drivers to merchant partners.

According to Grab's statistics in 2024, the average number of two-wheeled trips increased by 30% compared to 2014. For many drivers, the application is not only a job but also a solution to maintain income in the context of many economic difficulties. Mr. Le Quoc Dat (HCMC) shared that Grab has helped him earn extra income to support his family for more than 7 years.

Not only drivers, restaurant partners also recorded clear benefits. Ms. Pham Thi Tuyet, owner of a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, said that since cooperating with GrabFood, the restaurant's revenue has doubled.

"Thanks to the promotions on the app, my shop attracts a large number of customers. Sometimes, the whole alley is filled with shippers waiting to pick up the goods," she said.

Mr. Alejandro Osorio, CEO of Grab Vietnam, emphasized that the application wants to become a part of people's daily lives. With the sharing economy model, the application has brought benefits to all parties from users, drivers, restaurant partners to the local community.

However, for the sharing economy model to develop strongly and sustainably, improvements in the legal framework are needed. According to strategy expert Do Hoa, Vietnam needs to change its management approach. Legal regulations need to be more flexible, suitable for each stage in the value chain of this model, instead of applying old management thinking.

Commitment to accompany and develop sustainably

Celebrating 10 years of operation in Vietnam, Mr. Alejandro Osorio, CEO of Grab Vietnam, affirmed his commitment to accompany the country's socio-economic development.

The application focuses on enhancing economic capacity for people through digital transformation, especially in rural areas and micro, small and medium enterprises.

Grab Vietnam also aims for sustainable development through connected transport solutions, supporting environmental projects such as afforestation, reducing plastic waste and encouraging the use of environmentally friendly vehicles, contributing to the realization of Vietnam's green development strategy.
