Business community joins hands to reduce plastic waste in Con Dao

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Huynh Trung Son, Vice Chairman of Con Dao District People's Committee, said that Con Dao district, with its strengths in natural landscapes, revolutionary historical values ​​and strategic position in ensuring national defense - security, and national sovereignty over seas and islands, has always received special attention from the Party, State and Ba Ria - Vung Tau province in terms of conservation, exploitation and socio-economic development.

In recent years, besides the achievements in socio-economics and ensuring national defense and security, Con Dao has been facing many difficulties and environmental challenges, affecting sustainable development.

According to statistics, the average amount of solid waste generated in Con Dao currently ranges from 24-27 tons/day, the amount of waste remaining at Nhat beach (Con Dao) is about 70,000 tons. According to a survey by WWF-Vietnam, the amount of waste generated from service and tourism businesses accounts for about 41.5% of the total plastic waste generated on the entire island.

Therefore, finding solutions to promote green growth, sustainable growth, adaptation to climate change and harmony with the typical ecosystem is the top political task in Con Dao district.

Representatives of Con Dao District People's Committee and WWF Vietnam signed a commitment with tourism businesses and production and business activities in Con Dao District.

In March 2022, Con Dao became the 9th locality in Vietnam to participate in the "Plastic-Free Cities" initiative initiated by WWF with a commitment to reduce 30% of plastic waste lost to the environment by 2025 and towards zero plastic waste by 2030.

To achieve that goal, in recent times, environmental protection work in Con Dao district has been directed by the Party Committee and the government and has been unanimously implemented by the people with many models such as: Green - Clean - Beautiful Saturday, Green House, Plastic Waste Free Residential Area model, Plastic Waste Free School... which have brought about practical results, contributing to raising awareness and consciousness of environmental protection in Con Dao.

Ms. Nguyen My Quynh, WWF-Vietnam Project Manager, said: Sustainable tourism through promoting emission reduction practices and building a circular economic model is a top priority for Con Dao to become a rich, civilized, sustainably developed locality in harmony with nature.

Currently, in Con Dao district, there are 141 accommodation establishments operating, with a total of 2,702 accommodation rooms, accommodating more than 7,000 people/day; there are 87 restaurants, eateries, 41 gift and souvenir businesses; 16 tourism and travel service companies; about 450 tourist vehicles on the island; 48 high-speed boats and canoes transporting visitors to visit the marine ecosystem; There are 3 airlines and 3 passenger transport businesses from the mainland to Con Dao.

By signing a commitment to reduce plastic through specific actions in production, business and services, businesses and the community have affirmed the role, voice and responsibility of each organization and individual towards the ecological environment and development of Con Dao.

At the ceremony, the People's Committee of Con Dao district and investors and businesses operating in the tourism service sector in Con Dao signed a commitment to participate in reducing plastic in Con Dao and launched the "Reducing plastic tourism" check-in model with the aim of conveying the message of reducing plastic tourism and mobilizing businesses and business units operating in the district to participate in environmental protection activities, protecting the marine ecosystem in Con Dao, limiting the use of single-use plastic products to attract tourists to raise awareness, change behavior and habits of reducing the use of single-use plastic products, towards saying no to plastic waste in Con Dao by 2030.

After the ceremony, the People's Committee of Con Dao district organized a beach cleaning campaign to send a message to the people and tourists about practical actions towards a green, environmentally friendly lifestyle, reducing the use of disposable plastic products, protecting the environment and marine ecosystem in Con Dao.
