On the afternoon of September 12, the Ho Chi Minh City Informatics Association (HCA) and the Ho Chi Minh City Medical Equipment Association (HMEA) organized a workshop on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, to discuss and share the potential picture, as well as opportunities and challenges in applying artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare sector, promoting innovation to improve the quality of healthcare services.

Opportunities and challenges when applying artificial intelligence in the healthcare industry

The workshop is part of the "Pharmedi Vietnam 2024 International Exhibition of Medical Equipment, Supplies, Technology and Services", taking place from September 11 to 14 at SECC (District 7).

In his opening speech, Mr. Vu Anh Tuan, General Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Informatics Association, stated that when developing technology or applying AI in the medical field, HCA not only stands from the perspective of a technology worker but also puts itself in the position of the direct beneficiaries, aiming to improve the medical experience of the community.

Artificial intelligence AI and advanced technology solutions are contributing to changing the way healthcare is provided, however, the application of AI in the healthcare sector still faces many challenges, especially issues of data, finance, human resources, research capacity and legal corridors. Therefore, through the workshop, HCA hopes to receive more comments and initiatives from experts and scientists to promote the digital transformation process and successfully apply AI in the healthcare sector in Vietnam.

In recent times, medical facilities in Vietnam have focused on digital transformation, applying the initial achievements of AI. Although important results have been achieved, in general, this activity still faces many difficulties and challenges. Barriers include high investment costs, lack of resources with expertise in AI, and concerns about medical data security. In addition, the acceptance of new technology in the community is slow, due to the lack of a clear legal framework and necessary professional training for medical staff.

Ms. Ho Thi Hoang Yen, Technology Director, TMA Innovation shares the challenges and opportunities of the healthcare industry in Vietnam

Ms. Ho Thi Hoang Yen, Technology Director of TMA Innovation, commented that digital transformation in the healthcare industry in Vietnam is currently facing many difficulties and complications because the industry contains a lot of data, with a tendency to increase by 36% each year. Smart healthcare has been mentioned in many projects and reports, but it is still necessary to find specific solutions, especially the processing of huge amounts of data, which is the first and most important challenge in developing AI in healthcare in Vietnam. In addition, the healthcare industry in Vietnam also faces difficulties in applying AI due to the incomplete digital transformation process, lack of synchronized data, low information technology platform, lack of separate AI solutions for the healthcare industry, and lack of medical staff.

“In fact, the Vietnamese healthcare sector has a lot of potential and opportunities to apply AI to management, operations, and medical examination and treatment, such as abundant information technology resources, which are in the digital transformation phase. This is also the right time to build an AI application system into the apparatus, thereby helping medical facilities reduce costs and improve efficiency right from the start of digital transformation. Currently, applications that can be deployed include: Automation, medical record management, OCR - document recognition, diagnostic support, cancer screening…”, Ms. Ho Thi Hoang Yen shared more.
