(Dan Tri) - Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu Tran (born in 1981) has more than 20 years of experience working in special education for children with disabilities.
Previously, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu Tran (Tay Ninh) wanted to teach biology. When the late General Secretary Do Muoi returned to the locality to direct the construction of schools for children with disabilities, Ms. Tran decided to change direction to pursue a career in special education.
This pivotal decision led her on a meaningful educational path, where she spent 21 years caring for, teaching and supporting exceptional students.
Currently, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu Tran is the Principal of Tay Ninh Province School for the Disabled. Most recently, she was honored to receive the noble title of "Outstanding Teacher of 2024".
Sign Language, Braille and Soroban Mathematics
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu Tran studied special education, specializing in hearing impairment. But in 2003, when she first arrived at Tay Ninh Province School for the Disabled, Ms. Tran was assigned to the class of visually impaired children.
Sharing her feelings at that time, Ms. Tran said: "I was a bit worried because I did not have the knowledge and skills to teach visually impaired children. However, I understood that when working at the Tay Ninh Province School for the Disabled, the teacher must understand and be able to teach children with all types of disabilities.
I spent a lot of time studying Braille and Soroban math. Two knowledge and skills that are necessary for the blind to be able to teach them."
Braille is a raised writing system used by most blind and visually impaired people. Soroban is a method of mental calculation.
Ms. Tran learned additional skills while teaching. When she first graduated, Ms. Tran did not have much experience, but her kindness and diligence helped her improve.
"In my teaching journey, I have learned that each student has their own world, requiring a different approach. There are students who are older than me, but I do not let that be a barrier.
Instead, I always flexibly adjust my teaching methods: with young students, I choose a slow, leisurely pace; and with students with better cognitive abilities, I raise the level of the lesson, creating challenges and space for them to develop their full potential," said Ms. Tran.
Tay Ninh School for the Disabled has 3 groups of students, including: hearing impaired, visually impaired and slow development. In 2000, when it was first established, the school only accepted hearing impaired and visually impaired students. Until 2015, the school expanded and welcomed more slow development students.
In Ms. Tran's class, students will learn and interact with a variety of tools. In her special learning space, Ms. Tran always focuses on designing teaching aids suitable for each group of students.
In the hearing-impaired class, she often uses colorful, vivid images to stimulate and support the process of receiving information. In the visually impaired class, she shifts the focus to sound elements, creating rich learning experiences through sound.
When a student has difficulty, she will patiently hold their hand and guide them step by step: "If you still don't understand, I will patiently explain until you understand."
Phuong Duyen's parent, a student who was once mentored by Ms. Tran, shared: "Previously, Phuong Duyen had a timid and shy personality. She could not walk steadily and could not read clearly. But thanks to Ms. Tu Tran's encouragement and advice, she has become more confident.
From a shy, withdrawn girl due to slow development, I have gradually improved. I learned how to communicate confidently and can even stand on the school stage to give a speech. Her love and dedication have lit a fire of determination in me, helping a disadvantaged child like me find the wings of my own dreams.
From a slow-developing girl, she can communicate and be more active with everyone. Step by step, Ms. Tran guided and helped her read speeches or even sing in front of the whole school. Her kindness helped a child with many disabilities become more determined."
Dedicated to special children
During her work, Ms. Tu Tran has continuously and actively participated in many activities to build a learning environment for children with disabilities.
When she became the school's principal, Ms. Tran also encountered many difficulties: "In the new school year, I will divide students according to their disabilities. Sometimes a class will have students from slow development to hearing loss. Depending on their level, I will arrange the classes so that they can understand the lessons and teachers will have less trouble."
Ms. Tran also actively participated in the contest of making illustrated books for visually impaired students in 2018 organized by the Ho Chi Minh City General Science Library and won second prize. In addition, she also supported and shared experiences through reports at scientific seminars on sign language at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.
Ms. Tran Thi Phi Tu, Ms. Tran's colleague, commented: "Ms. Tran is an enthusiastic principal in her work. She loves her job, is dedicated to her students, and has many creative and innovative ideas in teaching.
When teaching at a special school like this, I have never seen Ms. Tran discouraged. She has good management skills, is sharp and excellent in completing all assigned tasks. Ms. Tran is always the ideal model of a moral teacher that any teacher should have."
Some students, once they can read and understand basic knowledge, will drop out of school and go to work in the fields. Ms. Tu Tran has proactively visited each family to persuade parents to let their children continue studying. If any student wants to work, Ms. Tran immediately contacts workshops or enterprises for the disabled to support them.
Ms. Tran confided: "The diligence and efforts of the students are the motivation for me to try harder every day. For special students, loving education is the key to help them overcome their self-consciousness and overcome themselves.
Up to now, choosing special education has always been the right decision in my life."
