“We support but…”

Báo Phụ nữ Việt NamBáo Phụ nữ Việt Nam09/11/2024

The unfinished sentence shows the concern of Mr. Vu Minh, a parent of a student at Hong Bang Secondary School (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City) and is also the mood of many parents that PNVN Newspaper reporters recorded.

Mr. Vu Minh shared: "The school has a rule that students are not allowed to use phones during class, I support it but I am also worried about the inconvenience in communicating with my child. The school has landline phones so that students can use them when needed but that is not proactive.

Therefore, my family only equipped my child with a cell phone and told him to keep it in his backpack, so that he could contact me when needed.

Agreeing with the school's tightening of control over students' use of cell phones during class, what makes Ms. Nguyen Hong Minh (Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi) wonder is whether this ban will cause children to "fall behind" in the context of the constant development of digital technology.

"Smartphones connected to the Internet can be a practical learning support tool for children. Children can learn foreign languages, search and store documents, and do digital exercises and tests. With applications integrated with artificial intelligence, children can draw pictures, find ideas for projects, write essays, create paintings, stories, videos, etc.

If students do not know how to take advantage of this huge source of knowledge and do not know how to apply technology to their studies, I am afraid they will not be able to adapt to today's rapidly developing society," Ms. Hong Minh worried.

"I see more benefits than harm in this regulation."

According to PNVN Newspaper reporters, many parents agree and support schools tightening control over students' use of cell phones.

Ms. Phan Kim Phuong, a parent whose child studies at Le Quy Don Secondary School (District 11, Ho Chi Minh City), said: "I think this regulation is very good, it has more benefits than disadvantages. Students who need to contact their parents can go to the cafeteria to call and pay a fee of 4-5 thousand VND/time.

Some students bring expensive phones and then lose them, leading to suspicion and unnecessary conflicts. Not to mention that students using phones during class will cause distraction and loss of concentration in studying.

The ban on students bringing cell phones to school at Huy Van Secondary School (Dong Da District, Hanoi) has also received the approval of parents. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Cuong (Tho Quan Ward, Dong Da District, Hanoi) felt very excited when his 8th grade daughter went to school without using a cell phone.

"At the beginning of last school year, my child followed his friends and asked his parents to buy him an expensive phone. In class, he had a chat group and his friends in the group often badmouthed and boycotted a girl in the class. Not to mention, I sometimes received feedback from the homeroom teacher that my child secretly used his phone during class.

So since the second semester of last school year, when I heard that the school had issued a regulation prohibiting students from bringing phones to school, I felt like a burden had been lifted. Without a phone, my child would definitely be more focused on the lecture. He would also connect with friends more directly instead of connecting via social networks," Mr. Cuong shared.

When she heard that her child's school had a rule about collecting students' phones during class, Ms. Phan Thi Thanh Thao (Dong Da district, Hanoi) was happy.

"At home, seeing my child with his phone all day long, even during class, makes me very anxious. It's hard for me to take away his phone because he makes up all sorts of excuses like exchanging lessons with friends, looking at the teacher's homework on Zalo...

I noticed that my child spends more time chatting with friends than studying, and as a result, his academic results are not good. I am very worried if he studies with his phone in hand in class like that. Therefore, I strongly support the regulation of collecting phones during class and I feel more secure when my child will focus more on listening to the lecture."

Clause 4, Article 37, Chapter V of Circular No. 32/2020/TT-BGDDT dated September 15, 2020 stipulates: Students are not allowed to use mobile phones or other devices while studying in class that are not used for studying and are not permitted by the teacher.

Next article: We should create a positive and responsible learning environment, instead of prohibiting it.
