Be proactive and ready for the Cinema Festival - The 7th Hanoi International Film Festival

Attending the meeting were Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, Director of the Department of Cinema; representatives of the Department of International Cooperation; Department of Planning and Finance; and the Ministry Office.

According to Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, with the slogan "Cinema: Creativity - Take Off", HANIFF VII will take place from November 7 - 11, 2024, with a series of rich activities to introduce and honor excellent works from many countries around the world.

Meeting scene

Mr. Vi Kien Thanh said that HANIFF VII has called for more than 500 works from 40 countries and territories to participate.

Determining that the quality of participating films is the decisive factor for the success and brand of a Film Festival, the Organizing Committee established a preliminary selection committee for films participating in HANIFF VII very early (March 2024).

By September 30, the Organizing Committee had selected: 11 films to participate in the Feature Film Competition (including 1 Vietnamese film, "Once Upon a Time There Was a Love Story" - directed by Trinh Dinh Le Minh).

The short film competition program (feature films, documentaries, and animations under 60 minutes long) includes 10 films from other countries and 10 Vietnamese films.

The World Cinema Panorama program has 31 participating films, including 20 feature films and 11 short films.

The Contemporary Vietnamese Film Program has 38 participating films, including 20 animated films and documentaries and 18 feature films.

The German Cinema Spotlight program has 7 participating films.

According to Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, this year's Hanoi International Film Festival chose German Cinema as its focus to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Germany diplomatic relations in 2025...

HANIFF VII also organized two seminars, including seminar 1 with the theme "Spotlight on German Cinema" to share perspectives and lessons learned from German cinema's film production; how to exploit human, social and humanistic themes; analyze creative multi-dimensional storytelling, filmmaking trends...

The second workshop with the theme "Developing film production exploiting historical themes and adapting literary works" will address issues when adapting literary works to cinema; renewing the thinking of filmmakers when exploiting historical themes; solutions to elevate and develop film genres, international experience...

"This year, in addition to the National Cinema Center, participating films will be screened at a number of theaters of CGV, BHD Pham Ngoc Thach... The Organizing Committee will increase interactive events with the public through two cineshow nights scheduled to be held in the walking street. This will be an open space, attracting movie lovers to watch movies and interact, meet film crews, artists, creating more spread for the Festival" - Mr. Vi Kien Thanh said.

The exhibition "Vietnam's Heritages Recognized by UNESCO - Experience through Cinema Films" promises to bring interesting experiences, especially for international tourists, artists and filmmakers when they can approach and admire the unique heritages of Vietnam recognized by UNESCO. This is a meaningful event, continuing the series of activities to connect and promote tourism - cinema organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in recent times.

Overview of the meeting

The Film Project Market is also an activity that has left many impressions at HANIFF. The Project Market is increasingly attractive to young filmmakers, and at the same time calls for investors to participate in building and implementing quality projects, contributing to promoting the development of Vietnamese cinema to reach the world level.

At the meeting, the Deputy Minister also heard reports on the progress of implementing the tasks of each sub-committee in the Film Festival Organizing Committee and the difficulties that need to be resolved.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister Ta Quang Dong affirmed that HANIFF VII aims to discover new talents of international and Vietnamese cinema; connect, exchange and cooperate for mutual development and cooperation between Vietnamese and international filmmakers, film distributors, and film artists. There will be about 300 international delegates including artists, directors, guests, and international filmmakers attending the event.

The Deputy Minister highly appreciated the initiative of the Department of Cinema in assigning tasks and establishing subcommittees to implement them scientifically and effectively. However, the Deputy Minister noted that, drawing on experience from previous Film Festivals, the Department of Cinema should proactively complete coordination documents with relevant units in a clear manner to avoid mistakes.

According to the Deputy Minister, in just over a month, the 7th Hanoi International Film Festival, one of the largest and most anticipated film events in 2024, will take place. The Deputy Minister requested the Department of Cinema and subcommittees to complete the detailed plan of the Film Festival's programs, working programs with relevant units, documents in coordination with the Hanoi People's Committee, list of international guests... and report back to the Organizing Committee and the Steering Committee of the Film Festival on October 10./.
