Paetongtarn Shinawatra, 37, won the support of at least 251 lawmakers in a vote in the 500-member House of Representatives.
Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra became the youngest prime minister in Thai history and the second female prime minister, after her own aunt, former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
"I believe in Pheu Thai. I believe in all parties in the government coalition to lead the country out of the economic crisis," Ms. Paetongtarn declared after receiving the nomination to become a candidate in the election for prime minister on August 15.
Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra was elected Prime Minister of Thailand at the age of 37.
Ms Paetongtarn will become the third member of the Shinawatra family to serve as prime minister of Thailand, after her father and aunt. Both Mr Thaksin Shinawatra and Ms Yingluck Shinawatra were ousted in military coups.
Growing up in a political environment
She is the youngest of three children of politician Thaksin Shinawatra and the fourth member of the Shinawatra family to become prime minister. Thaksin's brother-in-law, Somchai Wongsawat, was prime minister briefly in 2008, while his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, served as prime minister from 2011 to 2014. Both Somchai and Yingluck were forced to resign by court rulings.

Paetongtarn entered the doors of Chulalongkorn University - one of Thailand's most prestigious universities - during a time of turmoil in the country when her father was ousted as prime minister and banned from participating in political activities.
After the incident, Paetongtarn endured estrangement and hostility from her peers, who constantly pointed their criticism at her father.

Before entering Thai politics and becoming a candidate in the 2023 and 2024 elections, Ms. Paetongtarn spent time running the hotel division of her family's business empire and accompanying Mr. Thaksin to political events.
When Thaksin Shinawatra took office as prime minister in 2001, he was the first Thai politician to win a majority of seats. Therefore, the international media identified Thaksin's popularity and remaining influence as the factors behind the political support for Paetongtarn.
Young, enthusiastic
If most Thai prime ministers are often known as serious, older men, Ms. Paetongtarn seems to stand out in Thai politics with her enthusiastic, youthful and vibrant image.
Thailand has a 37-year-old female prime minister, the youngest in history.
Sharing with AFP, political analyst Yuttaporn Issarachai said that Ms. Paetongtarn's important role in the Pheu Thai Party is a move that shows that the party is having a strategy to support the youth movement, aiming to attract support from young people.
However, Mr. Yuttaporn Issarachai said that Thai politics is still very difficult to escape the influence of conservatives and the military that have dominated the country's politics for decades.

So it can be seen that although the Pheu Thai Party can attract support from young people, overcoming pressure from the military and pro-military opposition parties is still a big challenge, but the party has overcome it, making Ms. Paetongtarn the new prime minister of Thailand.
Thailand has just had its youngest new female prime minister in history: 37 years old, a businesswoman before entering politics.
Before entering politics, Ms. Paetongtarn was the No. 1 shareholder of SC Asset Corporation and a director of Thaicom Foundation. As of 2022, she held a total of 21 companies worth about 68 billion baht. This woman is responsible for running the Shinawatra family's hotel division.
According to media reports, she is married to Pitaka Suksawat, a Thai businessman who is currently the deputy director of investment at Rende Development and a board member of Thaicom Foundation. They have two children, a daughter and a son.
