On the morning of November 18, OpenAI suddenly announced that Sam Altman was no longer CEO, as well as stepping down from the company's board of directors.
"Mr. Altman's departure follows a deliberate board review process that concluded that his inconsistent management style was hindering his ability to carry out his duties. The board no longer has confidence in Mr. Altman's ability to continue leading OpenAI," OpenAI said in a statement.
OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati will be named interim CEO of the company, effective immediately. OpenAI will conduct a search for a permanent CEO.
Sam Altman also immediately shared his feelings after being fired from the company he founded.
“I loved my time at OpenAI,” Sam Altman wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter). “OpenAI has been transformative for me personally and hopefully a little bit for the world. Most of all, I love working with the talented people at OpenAI.”
In addition to Sam Altman, OpenAI said that another co-founder, Greg Brockman, would also step down as chairman of the board, but he would remain with the company. However, hours after OpenAI announced its departure, Brockman posted on social media X that he had left the company.
According to multiple sources, the decision to fire Sam Altman was kept secret from OpenAI employees and they only learned about it after the company's leadership made a public announcement.
The decision to fire Sam Altman surprised the technology world, as Altman was a very important factor at OpenAI and was considered the "father" of ChatGPT, OpenAI's most successful product today.
A week ago, at the first-ever DevDay developer conference hosted by OpenAI, Sam Altman made a shocking announcement that he wanted to build a super-intelligent artificial intelligence system that could think and operate, even reason like a human.
However, Sam Altman's ambition is now unfinished, or he will have to do this independently without the backing of OpenAI as before.
Sam Altman - Gay genius, dropped out of college and succeeded beyond expectations
Sam Altman was born on April 22, 1985 in Chicago, Illinois, USA, but grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where he received his first personal computer at the age of 8. This helped ignite his passion and love for programming, helping Sam Altman orient his future career from a young age.
After completing high school, Sam Altman was accepted into the prestigious Stanford University, but dropped out after only two years to pursue his passion for technology and business.
Although he did not complete his undergraduate program at Stanford, in 2017, Sam Altman was still awarded an honorary degree by the University of Waterloo (Canada) for his achievements and contributions to the technology and artificial intelligence industry.
Sam Altman started his career early. At 19, he founded his first company, Loopt, a location-based social networking app that launched at a time when Facebook and Twitter were starting to go global.
Despite the competition, Loopt raised $30 million in funding. However, by 2012, Loopt was no longer competitive and was acquired by fintech group Green Dot for $43.4 million.
While working at Loopt, Sam Altman also worked part-time at Y Combinator, an investment firm that supports startups.
Sam Altman's contributions caught the attention of Paul Graham, co-founder and president of Y Combinator. In 2014, Paul Graham passed on the chairmanship of Y Combinator to Sam Altman, making him president of a billion-dollar company at the age of 29.
As president of Y Combinator, Sam Altman has become a successful investor who has invested in many start-up projects and achieved many successes, including Airbnb, Reddit, Pinterest, Dropbox, Zenefits and Stripe...
Sam Altman grew up a vegetarian. He also openly came out as gay as a teenager. Sam Altman dated Nick Sivo, the co-founder of Loopt. The two dated for nine years, but broke up shortly after Loopt was acquired by another company.
Founded OpenAI and became the "father" of AI chatbot ChatGPT
In 2015, Sam Altman, along with billionaires Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston and Peter Thiel, pledged to invest one billion USD to establish OpenAI, a company specializing in research and development of artificial intelligence.
The original purpose of OpenAI's founding was to develop friendly and beneficial artificial intelligence systems, avoiding the possibility of artificial intelligence surpassing human control.
In 2018, billionaire Elon Musk stepped down from the company's board of directors, but continued to provide large amounts of funding for OpenAI's research activities. In 2019, Microsoft provided OpenAI with a $1 billion investment and by 2023, it will continue to increase the investment to $10 billion.
OpenAI has introduced a variety of AI systems, including gaming AI systems that can outperform the most experienced and professional gamers. However, it was not until the introduction of the ChatGPT AI system in November 2022 that OpenAI became more widely known, including to people outside the tech industry.
As co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman was directly involved in the development of ChatGPT, which makes Sam act as the "father" of ChatGPT's artificial intelligence superpower.
Although Sam Altman believes that ChatGPT's success is inevitable for a project that has been carefully invested in and developed for many years, he also admits that he was very surprised when ChatGPT received a warmer reception than expected from users.
Sam Altman hopes that ChatGPT can surpass human intelligence in the future.
As a successful programmer, entrepreneur, and investor without graduating from college, Sam Altman does not encourage others to drop out of college like him. Sam believes that the knowledge taught in college will help people a lot when they actually step out into the world.
Sam Altman's current fortune is estimated at $700 million.
