Located about 20 km from Sa Pa town, Seo My Ty Lake is a suitable place for those who love to explore. According to the Information Center, National Tourism Administration (TITC), this is the highest artificial freshwater lake in Vietnam, blessed with beautiful scenery by nature.
Nguyen Dinh Tuan's family from Hanoi came to Seo My Ty at the end of February. Having camped in many places in Vietnam, Tuan chose a place that was not well-known and not crowded for the New Year. Researching before the trip, he said that this is a place with clear blue water and floating clouds. Visitors coming here will feel the peace, different from the rapid development of Sa Pa town. This place is suitable for picnics with groups of friends and family.
Tuan's family camping trip was limited to two days of the weekend. The family of five (three adults, two children aged 8 and 11) departed from Hanoi at 5am on Saturday morning, traveling along the Noi Bai - Lao Cai highway to Pho Lu (Bao Thang district) to rest and have a snack, then headed towards Ta Van village (Sa Pa town) and traveled a few more kilometers to the lake.
The distance of more than 200 km of highway, has about 60-70 km of mountain road with good road surface, "some sections are foggy and some places are difficult to travel due to landslides so visibility is limited to 3 to 5 m", said Mr. Tuan.
When arriving at the lake, Mr. Tuan's first feeling was "refreshing" because of the peaceful scenery, fresh air and the peach blossoms blooming brightly at the ranger station. The special thing about Seo My Ty is seeing clouds floating on the lake's surface.
"The best experience is leisurely walking and watching the clouds floating on the lake, all day from noon to late afternoon. The path through the clouds at the hydroelectric dam also has bright red cherry blossoms, pure white pear blossoms, and salmon and sturgeon farms," said Mr. Tuan. During the dry season, Mr. Tuan's children can walk along the lake shore, watch people catch fish and crabs, and pick up sparkling pebbles to bring home as souvenirs.
The weather in Seo My Ty was below 10 degrees, quite cold, but because they had a large tent with enough heat, mattresses, and warm blankets, they decided to camp by the lake overnight to sleep in the clouds. "We ate delicious food, watched beautiful flowers, and slept with the clouds for two days. It felt great," said Mr. Tuan.
If you don’t have enough warm clothes when it’s too cold, Mr. Tuan recommends camping during the day and staying at a homestay at night. There are currently three homestays in the lakeside area with basic facilities, with double room rates ranging from 400,000 to 600,000 VND per night.
The first lunch upon arrival, the family booked in advance at the homestay right at the lake. "The salmon in Seo My Ty are raised in cold water and the climate is fresh, so they are crispy and very sweet," said Mr. Tuan. For the remaining meals, because they had camped many times and had experience, the family cooked food in advance and packed it in ice bags, then heated it up at mealtime with a gas stove they brought along. In the evening, the whole family burned firewood to keep warm and sat around, drinking tea. At noon the next day, they packed up the tent and headed back to Hanoi.
"This was probably the best camping trip ever. The whole family is planning to stay longer next time so we can play more," said Mr. Tuan.
According to Mr. Tran Thanh, a member of a camping forum with more than 200,000 members, Seo My Ty is a "particularly suitable destination in the summer". In the summer, the lake will be full, allowing for swimming activities. In addition, summer is also convenient for visiting places such as Seo Trung Ho stream, 16 km long, originating from the southeastern slope of Fansipan peak.
"In the summer, when coming to Seo My Ty, visitors will be able to experience crossing streams, conquering three-tiered waterfalls and bathing at Rong Waterfall," said Mr. Thanh.
