AFP news agency reported that according to a threat report published by Google, the hacker group "APT42" linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has monitored the activities of high-ranking individuals and organizations in Israel and the US, including government officials and political campaigns.
The report said Google continued to detect unsuccessful attempts by APT42 to compromise the accounts of individuals associated with US President Joe Biden, Vice President Harris and Republican presidential candidate Trump.
The hacker group operates by gathering information about its targets and attempting to trick victims into revealing login information to accounts like Gmail.
Earlier the same day, Ms. Harris's campaign team confirmed that last month, they were notified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) that the team had been "targeted by a foreign influence operation."
“We have robust cybersecurity measures in place and are not aware of any security breaches to our systems as a result of such activities,” they shared.
On August 12, the FBI also said it was investigating after Donald Trump's campaign team announced they had been the victim of a cyber attack.
The Trump campaign has implicated Iran in a cyberattack that sent documents it used to investigate vice presidential candidate JD Vance to reporters.
Following the Trump campaign's accusations, the US State Department on August 12 warned Iran of the consequences of election interference. However, the Iranian government has denied that it hacked Mr Trump's election campaign.
