General Phan Van Giang affirmed that Vietnam always complies with the Charter, resolutions and action programs of the United Nations. The Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense thanked the United Nations for its companionship and support for Vietnam over the past 47 years.

Within the framework of the visit to the Future Summit, the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UN) by General Secretary, President To Lam and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to the US, on September 23 in New York (local time), General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, Minister of National Defense, met with UN Deputy Secretary-General in charge of peacekeeping operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix. Minister Phan Van Giang expressed his pleasure to visit the UN headquarters and meet UN Deputy Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix; highly appreciated the role of the UN in building the international legal system, maintaining peace, preventing conflicts and responding to global challenges; affirmed that, as a member state of the UN, Vietnam always complies with the UN Charter, resolutions and action programs. The Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense thanked the United Nations for its support and companionship with Vietnam over the past 47 years. Minister Phan Van Giang emphasized that in the field of defense and security, Vietnam has actively participated in the United Nations' joint efforts in addressing non-traditional security challenges, contributing to maintaining regional and international peace and security, especially UN peacekeeping activities, disarmament, and cross-border crime prevention. In addition, as a member of international conventions on disarmament, Vietnam has strictly complied with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council on preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, proactively and actively participating in all activities within the framework of the conventions.

Informing Deputy Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix about the results after 10 years of Vietnam's participation in UN peacekeeping operations, Minister Phan Van Giang said that so far, Vietnam has sent more than 900 military and police personnel to the UN Missions in South Sudan (UNMISS), the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), and the Abyei Region (UNISFA); successfully deployed 5 Level 2 Field Hospitals at the UNMISS Mission and 2 Engineering Teams at the UNISFA Mission. On September 24, 2024, Vietnam continued to deploy Level 2 Field Hospital No. 6 to the UNMISS Mission and Engineering Team No. 3 to the UNISFA Mission. In addition, Vietnam has always maintained a high rate of female soldiers participating in UN peacekeeping operations (about 14%). On behalf of the leadership of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense, Minister Phan Van Giang sincerely thanked the United Nations and Deputy Secretary General Jean-Pierre Lacroix personally for always supporting and backing Vietnam in this field. Emphasizing that Vietnam consistently pursues an independent, self-reliant foreign policy for peace, cooperation and development, is a friend and reliable partner, and a responsible member of the international community, Minister Phan Van Giang said that Vietnam wishes to continue to increase its participation in UN peacekeeping activities, both in form and scale of deployment; at the same time, increase the number of officers participating in activities organized by the United Nations; as well as receive the support, assistance and facilitation of the United Nations for Military Attachés and officers of the Vietnam People's Army at the United Nations.

Minister Phan Van Giang also hopes that UN Deputy Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix will continue to support Vietnam's commitments and political determination in participating in UN peacekeeping operations. UN Deputy Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix highly appreciated Vietnam's increasingly active and effective participation in UN peacekeeping operations, in which Vietnamese soldiers and police officers have demonstrated their capacity, qualifications, professionalism and sense of responsibility in performing their duties at UN peacekeeping missions; emphasizing that this has helped improve the effectiveness of the missions in which Vietnam sends forces to participate. Affirming that he will continue to pay attention to and support Vietnam in enhancing its capacity and expanding its participation in UN peacekeeping activities in the coming time, UN Deputy Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix believes that the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense in particular and Vietnam in general will continue to make effective contributions to these activities, thereby affirming its obligations and responsibilities towards international peace and security, while strengthening the relationship of trust and cooperation with the UN as well as its partners.
