Responding to questions, Minister Nguyen Kim Son said that school violence was an issue raised in the previous question-and-answer session, as well as in several socio-economic discussion sessions that received great attention from delegates.
The Minister cited statistics updated as of November 5 showing that from September 1, 2021 to November 5, 2023, there were 699 school violence cases nationwide, involving 2,016 students, of which 854 were female.
“It can be said that the developments of school violence are quite complicated. With this number, on average, there is one school violence incident every 50 educational institutions. The violent incidents involve many students and occur both inside and outside of school. The issue of female students participating in school violence more is also something that the education sector is very concerned and worried about, and is looking for ways to work with the whole country and localities to deal with this issue,” Minister Nguyen Kim Son emphasized.
Explaining the causes of school violence, the commander of the education sector affirmed that there are many causes, including causes from the education sector and within schools.
Accordingly, it can be said that the responsibility for detecting and handling situations leading to violence is assigned to teachers, and at the same time teachers will concurrently provide psychological counseling or assign responsibility to the school principal.
However, the Minister also said that when principals and teachers discover situations of school violence, they are still somewhat confused about how to handle them.
Besides, after a long period of the epidemic, students have to study online for a long time, which also leads to psychological problems; or psychological and physiological problems in adulthood are also risk factors.
Minister Nguyen Kim Son.
“One issue that the whole society is concerned about is that according to statistics from the Supreme People's Court, there are 220,000 divorces every year, of which 70-80% are related to conflicts and domestic violence. With such a rate of domestic violence, students in these families can be both witnesses to violence and victims of violence and abandonment,” said the Minister.
According to statistics, the percentage of students with a family violence background related to violence in school is very high. Therefore, preventing and resolving family problems is very important.
Minister Nguyen Kim Son also emphasized the influence of social networks and movies, especially foreign movies that are popular with young people, often featuring the motif of mass violence that is widely broadcast on the internet. With the above issues, the Minister suggested that relevant sectors coordinate with the education sector to solve this problem.
Previously, recently, according to press reports, a number of school violence cases continued to attract public attention and outrage, such as: The case of a 9th grade female student (in Van Ninh, Khanh Hoa) who was beaten many times by 5 classmates, filmed, and shared on social media; the case of a male student at Dai Dong Secondary School (Thach That, Hanoi) who was beaten by a group of friends to the point of psychological trauma and had to be hospitalized; or the case of a male student at Dong Da Secondary School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) who suspected his friend of picking up money he had dropped, so he beat his classmate up repeatedly ...
