Mystery of two giant whale skeletons

The Tan Tomb relic (Dong An Vinh village, Ly Son district, Quang Ngai) is home to the two largest whale skeletons (locals call them Whales) in Vietnam, which have been completely restored by experts. These two skeletons are named after Dong Dinh Dai Vuong (left) and Duc Ngu Hai Vi Ton Than (right).

Two whale skeletons have been preserved by Ly Son people for about 250 - 300 years, with lengths of 18m and 22m respectively, and height of nearly 4m.

Each whale skeleton has 50 vertebrae. The largest vertebrae is over 40cm in diameter, the skull is 4m long, and the tusk is 4.7m long.

The fish bones are respectfully called jade bones by fishermen.

Previously, the whale bones were kept in the mausoleum, but over hundreds of years, many parts were damaged, especially the head. The restoration unit had to use the method of plasticizing some rotten bones and restoring the whale head with composite resin.

The project to restore two whale skeletons in Lang Tan has a total investment of over 14 billion VND (including the Exhibition House), to be completed in early 2022.

Ly Son district currently has dozens of whale skeletons dating from several decades to over 300 years old. The locality is focusing on exploiting tourism products from these skeletons.

Since 2023, more than 150,000 visitors have come to Tan Mausoleum to see the two whale skeletons.

Here, visitors can also hear mysterious stories and learn about the whale worship of the island's residents.
