As of the evening of April 9, the information on the Grab app's map that displayed incorrect names of many islands in the Truong Sa archipelago had not been corrected.

On Grab's map, Vietnam's Vanh Khan Reef is shown as "Meiji Island - Tam Sa - China", which is an incorrect display.

Initially, a user on a technology forum shared about discovering errors on Grab's map. This person accidentally discovered that the names of many islands in the Truong Sa archipelago on the Grab application were displayed in Chinese.

Many people were upset when they discovered that the map on the Grab ride-hailing app incorrectly displayed the names of many islands in Vietnam's Truong Sa archipelago. Specifically, on the entities in Vietnam's Truong Sa archipelago, the Grab map is shown in both Vietnamese and Chinese. Some islands such as Son Ca, Sinh Ton, and Song Tu Tay are listed in Vietnamese, but some other entities such as Subi Reef, Chau Vien Reef, and Vanh Khan Reef are shown in Chinese, the way China uses to name these entities.

Notably, on Vietnam's Cross Reef, which was illegally occupied and illegally reclaimed by China, is annotated "Nansha District", which is an illegal administrative unit established by China and which Vietnam has repeatedly voiced strong protests against.

It is known that this map was developed by Grab in collaboration with some self-developed units. Grab does not use Google Maps.

Grab Vietnam said that it has received feedback regarding the display of maps on the Grab app and is actively working with the map provider to resolve the issue.

“We take your comments very seriously and sincerely apologize for any concerns that may arise. Grab Vietnam is committed to a long-term commitment to the Vietnamese market and always wishes to contribute more to the country's economic and social development,” said a representative of Grab Vietnam.
