Developing the marine economy in a green and sustainable direction

Ba Ria - Vung Tau currently has more than 305km of coastline stretching across 5/8 districts and cities; at the same time, it is a locality with the advantage of deep-water ports, the gateway to the sea of ​​the Southeast region. With such potentials, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has many advantages to develop the marine economy with activities such as tourism and seaports... Therefore, in recent times, Ba Ria - Vung Tau has always closely followed the practical situation, promoted and effectively utilized the province's outstanding strengths to strongly develop the marine economy.

Specifically, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province focuses on investing in transport infrastructure to solve bottlenecks in connectivity, forming a comprehensive and interconnected maritime economic corridor between the province and other provinces and cities in the region, the country and internationally, contributing to creating momentum for the development of the local maritime economy. Typically, Ba Ria - Vung Tau always pays attention to investing in the strong development of the seaport system as well as focusing on exploiting and taking advantage of existing advantages to build logistics service centers, contributing to bringing the province's maritime economy to regional and global competitiveness.

To take advantage of and maximize the advantages of seaports, Ba Ria - Vung Tau also planned and built a system of 15 industrial parks (IPs) associated with seaports with a total area of ​​about 8,510 hectares. The IPs have attracted many large-scale projects with modern technology and high spillover effects such as: PPP factory and underground LPG storage of Hyosung Group with an investment capital of 1.2 billion USD; Southern Petrochemical Complex with an investment capital of 5.4 billion USD; Long Son Power Center with an investment capital of 4.5 billion USD...

Mr. Nguyen Van Hai - Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province said: For many years, Ba Ria - Vung Tau has always determined the goal of developing the marine economy in a sustainable direction, on the basis of exploiting marine resources in depth, ensuring long-term stability, not encroaching or damaging the values ​​of the sea and islands; at the same time, developing the marine economy sustainably on the basis of green growth.

Accordingly, in addition to focusing on effectively exploiting marine resources, Ba Ria - Vung Tau has also implemented many solutions to protect the marine environment in a sustainable manner. At the same time, the province has also focused on propaganda and dissemination of regulations on environmental protection; organized many activities in response to World Oceans Day, Vietnam Sea and Islands Week, and the "Let's clean up the sea" campaign to mobilize the widespread participation of the entire political system and all classes of people.

The People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has also assigned the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to preside over and coordinate with relevant departments, branches and localities to guide and inspect the implementation of procedures and regulations on environmental protection for tourism businesses; monitor, inspect and strictly handle violations of environmental protection regulations at tourist areas, tourist attractions and tourism businesses according to the provisions of the law on environmental protection; at the same time, encourage tourist accommodation establishments to focus on using clean energy sources, saving resources and minimizing impacts on the marine environment.

In addition, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province strengthens coordination with relevant departments, branches and localities to review, supplement and develop new plans related to sea and islands in the direction of comprehensive management, suitable for the marine and island ecosystem; ensure harmonious and synchronous connection between conservation and development of mainland, coastal, sea and island areas of the province; strengthen water quality monitoring in seaport areas to have strict environmental protection solutions, suitable for environmental quality conditions and management work of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province.

Raising awareness and responsibility of the community

According to Mr. Nguyen Cong Vinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, in order to effectively manage and exploit marine resources, each agency, unit, enterprise and people must raise awareness of the management, protection and sustainable development of the sea and islands. This is the "key" to promoting the advantages and potential of the sea and islands, creating a breakthrough in the socio-economic development of the locality.

Therefore, every year, the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province issues documents requesting departments, branches and localities to strengthen the dissemination and education of laws on management, protection and sustainable development of seas and islands; at the same time, departments, branches and localities promote propaganda and dissemination of knowledge on prevention, response, control and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters and marine environmental incidents; raise public awareness about the exploitation, sustainable use of resources and environmental protection of coastal and island areas.

Recently, the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province issued Official Dispatch No. 6839/UBND-VP on organizing activities in response to World Environment Day (June 5) and World Oceans Day (June 8) in 2023. Accordingly, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment is assigned as the standing agency, coordinating with departments, branches, functional units and localities to focus on disseminating the Party's viewpoints and policies, the State's policies and laws, international laws on seas and islands; Vietnam's legitimate and legal rights and interests at sea; the position, role and importance of seas, islands and oceans; marine and island resources and environment in the province's sustainable development.

At the same time, Ba Ria - Vung Tau organizes seminars, conferences, forums... on the management, exploitation, rational, effective, fair and sustainable use of marine and island resources; control of marine environmental pollution; protection, maintenance and restoration of marine, coastal and island biodiversity; conservation and promotion of natural heritage values, marine cultural heritage; safe and sustainable exploitation and fishing, proactive and effective response to climate change and rising sea levels; investigation and scientific research on the sea and islands as well as tidal and oceanographic information systems to serve socio-economic development activities, ensuring national defense and security.

In addition, Ba Ria - Vung Tau also organizes activities with community participation; launches community movements, cleans up the marine environment, collects and treats waste, does not discharge plastic waste into the environment...; strengthens communication work on mass media to introduce outstanding activities, solutions, and models of marine environmental protection; discovers and commends organizations, individuals, and businesses that have made effective and practical contributions to the use of resources, protection of the marine and island environment, and response to climate change... in the province.
