After more than two years studying Pharmacy at the University of Calabria (Italy), Pham Duc Hoang (born in 1998) decided to drop out and switch to Information Technology because he saw opportunities for self-development.
Formerly a student of a specialized school, he won a full scholarship to study abroad in Italy . Pham Duc Hoang was a student majoring in Geography at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. After graduating from high school, Viet Hoang won a full scholarship and chose to study Pharmacy at the University of Calabria (Italy) according to his family's direction. However, the developments of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2022 created a turning point in Hoang's study path after nearly 3 years of studying abroad. The male student returned to Vietnam to avoid the epidemic and started an online learning program. The endless time at home combined with facing the computer screen all day made Hoang feel bored and stagnant. Duc Hoang recalled: “The amount of knowledge in the Pharmacy industry is very large and very heavy, so at that time, I had to sit in the room all day to read books, listen to lectures, and research documents. When it was time for practice, I only heard teachers describe the tools and processes but had no chance to do it directly. All of that made me feel suffocated and stifled.” Pharmacy was not my choice but was a direction from my family, plus the repetitive life within four walls made Hoang’s intention to change majors and careers stronger and stronger. However, when he decided to drop out of his Pharmacy program in Italy, Hoang also had many concerns and worries. “When I made the decision, my family was very surprised because I had invested a lot of effort in the Pharmacy program and Italian. It took me a long time to convince my parents to believe in my choice,” Hoang said.
Deciding to drop out of studying abroad, Duc Hoang did not take too much time to choose to study Information Technology at FPT Polytechnic College (Hanoi). Entering a new learning environment at the age of 24, the male student could not avoid feeling shy and bewildered. "When I entered school, I was much older than the other students, so I was a bit shy. Not many people like me chose to go back to school from the beginning," Hoang said. However, the young man quickly reassured himself when he determined that he needed to study and live for himself instead of social prejudices. Thanks to that, that feeling of apprehension passed very quickly. Right from the first days of studying in the new environment, Hoang was determined to study hard and practice to prove to his family that this was the right choice. In fact, after entering the new environment, Hoang seemed to have become a different person. From a quiet person who stayed at home all day, Hoang has become increasingly bold, confident, and achieved excellent results in his studies and extracurricular activities. The male student has won a series of impressive achievements such as: winning the Golden Bee title in the Spring 2023 semester with a score of 9.94, and the Champion of the "Wibe Bees" English exam. Hoang is also the Vice President of the school's Event Organization Club... Duc Hoang has also organized 3 workshops on programming, project experience, and English for information technology. Through the exchanges, Hoang hopes to convey his experiences and knowledge to students. "Although I studied at college, it gave me the knowledge to pass the interview and now have a stable job. Currently, I am still being trained by businesses and hope to demonstrate my abilities more in the future." Hoang said that prejudices between university and college degrees always exist. But for me, it was the right choice, helping me develop in an environment that suits me. “The most important thing is the value that employees can bring to the company or business. If you are truly excellent, then the degree from which school is not too important,” Hoang said. The male student also gave advice to students who are uncertain about their future choices: “You should try your best and experience a lot. Because only when you stumble will you know what career and field you are truly suited for.”
