Can Tho is one of the must-see stops on your journey to the Mekong Delta provinces.
The following two-day itinerary in Can Tho is advised by Ms. Do Vy, tour guide of Con Son Tourism Cooperative (Can Tho City) and the experience of VnExpress reporters. This is a suitable trip for those who have little time, but still want to visit all the popular places and eat typical dishes in Can Tho.
Day 1
Morning and noon
Breakfast in the city center with the recommended dish being Hu Tieu. Can Tho is one of the best places to eat Nam Vang Hu Tieu in the West. The main ingredients are Hu Tieu noodles, broth made from minced meat and pork offal. Some additional but indispensable ingredients are bean sprouts, chives, minced meat, beef balls and some other ingredients depending on the restaurant. Recommended restaurants: A Dai, Huynh Ky, Ngoc Ngan.
The next morning trip is to visit Con Son. This is a small island located in the middle of Hau River, about 7 km from the city center. "If you don't have much time, a half-day tour of Con Son is a suitable choice for tourists who want to learn about the life of the southern river region," said Do Vy.
Tour activities usually include boating on the river, checking in at the floating fish village, massaging with Koi fish, visiting and enjoying fruits in the garden, experiencing making banh khot under the guidance of local people, watching the "flying snakehead fish" performance - a form of fish "flying" to catch bait. Lunch will be served at one of the families in the Con Son area, with Western dishes.
Con Son tours usually depart from the city center, from 8am or 2pm. Prices range around 250,000 VND per person. Meals are usually paid for by the visitor. If you want them included in the tour, you can book in advance.
Evening
After returning to the city center, visitors should not miss one of the famous attractions in Can Tho, Binh Thuy ancient house.
The house is located on Bui Huu Nghia Street, about 8 km from the center. Binh Thuy Ancient House is owned by the Duong family and was built in 1870. This was the setting for famous films such as The Lover, The Alluvial Roads, and The Beauty of Tay Do. Opening hours are from 8am to 12pm and from 2pm to 6pm. Entrance fee is 15,000 VND per person.
"This is a beautiful place to take photos, so visitors, especially women, should choose light clothes, maybe like the main character in the movie The Lover , " Vy added.
In the evening, one of the options is to walk and stroll around Ninh Kieu wharf night market, Tay Do night market, mainly concentrated on Hai Ba Trung, Nguyen Thai Hoc, Tran Phu streets. The market is usually open from after 4pm until late at night, with many stalls selling on mobile carts, snacks, grilled food, and fruit stalls.
End the day with a walk on Ninh Kieu pedestrian bridge, also known as Can Tho love bridge. The bridge was built in 2016 and is one of the tourist attractions, especially in the late afternoon.
Stay overnight at a hotel in Ninh Kieu district along the Hau River. This is a convenient location for travel and is also home to many hotels. The average price ranges from 500,000 VND to 800,000 VND per night.
Day 2
Morning and noon
Get up early to go to Cai Rang floating market. This is a typical feature of the life of people in the Mekong Delta. Trading activities are not as busy as before, there are very few boats selling local agricultural products on the river, but if it is your first time in Can Tho, visitors should still have the experience of visiting the floating market.
Currently, boats on the Hau River mainly serve tourists, selling food such as vermicelli soup with crab, rice noodles, coffee and fruits (usually pre-peeled for customers to eat on the spot).
Visitors to Ninh Kieu wharf can buy tickets to get on the boat right away. Visitors can also book tickets to visit the floating market in advance on a tour or at the hotel. Visiting the floating market is free, but taking the boat will cost from 80,000 to 100,000 VND per person, depending on the type of boat and the number of passengers. The time to visit the floating market ranges from 2 to 4 hours.
Lunch at Hoi Do restaurant. This is one of the authentic Western-style country restaurants located in the center of Can Tho city, in a small alley on Tran Binh Trong street, Ninh Kieu district. Dishes at the restaurant include pickled vegetables, boiled vegetables with kho quet sauce, fried eggs, stir-fried morning glory with garlic, three-sided crab mixed with garlic and chili, braised pork with shrimp paste, braised fish, and sour basa fish soup. The restaurant is a level 4 house, with two dining areas, indoors and outdoors. Food is served in earthenware bowls and plates.
Afternoon
In the evening, take time to walk around the city center. Can Tho is the center and the most modern city in the Mekong Delta. In addition to the places visited above, the city also has Can Tho Bridge, Ong Pagoda, Phat Hoc Pagoda, and Can Tho Museum.
Sit in a coffee shop and watch the sunset on the Hau River at one of the shops such as Song Hau Coffee, Song Tho Cuisine (both food and drinks). Have dinner at Thanh Giao duck cooked with fermented bean curd restaurant in an alley on Ly Tu Trong street.
If you do not follow the above schedule, you can choose some alternative destinations such as: My Khanh tourist village, Ong De eco-tourism area, Bang Lang stork garden. Note the distance and how to travel to arrange a suitable schedule. In the evening, if you do not like walking, you can choose to take the electric car to tour Can Tho at night or have dinner on a large cruise ship running along the Hau River. Note to bargain carefully at the night market and choose reputable boats.
