Dr. Pham Huy Hieu, Dr. Ha Thi Thanh Huong and Dr. Ngo Quoc Duy are in the top 20 candidates out of 158 nominees for Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces 2023.
The list was announced by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the Council for the 2023 Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces Award on February 20. Among the 20 candidates, 3 scientists were nominated in the field of scientific research and innovation.
Among them, Dr. Pham Huy Hieu, 32 years old, is a lecturer at the Institute of Computer Science and Engineering, Deputy Director of the VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center, VinUni University. Dr. Hieu has published 50 articles in prestigious journals and is the co-author of two excellent papers (Best Paper Award) at international conferences. He also holds the position of head and co-head of six domestic and international scientific topics. His two most favorite doctoral research projects are in the field of AI application in healthcare, including "VAIPE Solution: Smart healthcare monitoring and support system for Vietnamese people" and "Research and construction of a large-scale medical imaging facility to support early disease prediction models".

The VAIPE system was developed by Dr. Hieu and his research team at the VinUni-Illinois Center for Smart Health and colleagues at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. The solution was highly appreciated and won the AI Awards 2022 thanks to its low cost, ease of operation, and large-scale deployment.
With the project "Research and construction of a large-scale medical imaging facility to support early disease prediction models", conducted at the Vingroup Big Data Research Institute (VinBigdata), Dr. Hieu, under the leadership of Dr. Nguyen Quy Ha (currently the Institute's executive director), has published five large datasets on medical imaging diagnosis, and opened them for free to the domestic and international scientific community.
The dataset has now been cited thousands of times by research groups around the world to evaluate the effectiveness of computer vision algorithms and models. "The project not only solves problems in Vietnam but also promotes the trend of open science and open data," he explained.
Dr. Hieu has received the Golden Globe Science Award 2023; The ISCN Excellence Awards for digital health projects with outstanding contributions to sustainable development and The DAAD Fellows 2021 international science award for outstanding young researchers in the field of artificial intelligence.

Dr. Ha Thi Thanh Huong, 35 years old, Head of the Department of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, International University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, is known as a scientist pursuing research on solutions to problems related to the brain, including research on Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Ha Thi Thanh Huong graduated with a PhD in neuroscience from Stanford University (USA) in 2018, after which she returned to Vietnam to work. In 2022, she was awarded the L'Oreal - UNESCO For Women in Science national science scholarship with a project to create a kit to detect Alzheimer's disease on-site without having to use diagnostic equipment from hospitals. Based on this kit, doctors at district health centers can also use it to diagnose Alzheimer's disease instead of having to use modern imaging equipment.
Most recently, Dr. Huong was one of 10 young faces to receive the 2023 Golden Globe Award for her research on Brain Analytics software, which analyzes MRI images of patients' brains and diagnoses Alzheimer's disease accurately, automatically, and quickly, and has been trained and tested on the ADNI database (USA) with an accuracy of about 96%. The software has been experienced and evaluated by doctors and medical students from 8 different hospitals nationwide, 80% of whom are satisfied with the features that the software brings.
In 2023, she was also named as the National Outstanding Teacher, Women of the Future Southeast Asia 2023 and Outstanding Young Citizen of Ho Chi Minh City.
