This morning, January 9, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Health held a conference to deploy health work in 2024. According to the Ministry of Health, in 2023, the health sector achieved many health targets. In particular, the whole sector achieved 12.5 doctors, exceeding the assigned target of 12 doctors; the number of hospital beds/10,000 people achieved the target of 32 hospital beds.
The health insurance participation rate reached the target of 93.2% of the population. The number of university pharmacists per 10,000 people reached 32 (higher than the assigned target of 30)...
However, some basic population indicators were not met; in which, average life expectancy (from birth) was 73.7 years, lower than the target of 73.8 years. Notably, the sex ratio at birth remained high at 112 boys/100 girls, not meeting the target of 111.2 boys/100 girls.

The Ministry of Health said that in 2024, the entire sector will implement solutions to develop a fair, high-quality, effective, sustainable health system, and control epidemics well; strengthen grassroots health care and preventive medicine, improve the quality of medical examination and treatment at all levels; perfect institutions and policies, and effectively address the shortage of human resources, drugs, supplies, equipment, and medical biological products.
Complete the draft Population Law dossier; continue to effectively implement Resolution No. 21-NQ/TW dated October 25, 2017 of the 12th Central Executive Committee on population work in the new situation, Vietnam's Population Strategy to 2030, Project on controlling gender imbalance at birth for the period 2016 - 2025, Program on adjusting birth rates to suit regions and subjects by 2030.
In particular, the Project to control gender imbalance at birth for the period 2016 - 2025 has set the goal of reducing the growth rate of the sex ratio at birth, bringing the sex ratio at birth to a natural balance.
Enhance the effectiveness of implementing legal regulations on controlling gender imbalance at birth with specific activities: disseminating and educating legal regulations on prohibiting forms of fetal sex selection; promote activities to inspect and supervise the implementation of laws related to fetal sex selection.
Strengthen the ability to prevent and detect violations, increase penalties for violations of gender selection at birth; overcome the abuse of high technology to select the gender of the fetus...
In 2022, according to an assessment study by population experts, in Vietnam, 45,900 girls will not be born due to fetal sex selection.
According to data from the General Statistics Office (Ministry of Planning and Investment), the sex ratio at birth of Vietnam's population in 2023 is 112 boys/100 girls, reflecting that the gender imbalance at birth in our country remains high. Vietnam's sex ratio at birth has shown signs of slowing down in recent years and is expected to decrease in the following years.
Vietnam needs to continue to make efforts to implement better measures to achieve the Government's target set in the Vietnam Population Strategy: "By 2030, the sex ratio at birth will be below 109 boys/100 live birth girls".
