In the women's singles final of the 2024 Olympics on the morning of August 4, Zheng Qinwen had no difficulty defeating Danna Verkic (Croatia) after only 2 games with the scores of 6-2, 6-3. The Chinese female tennis player showed a difference in class, as she is ranked 7th in the world. Meanwhile, Verkic is currently ranked 21st. This victory helped Zheng Qinwen become the first singles player to bring home an Olympic gold medal for Chinese sports. Her journey to victory was impressive when she overcame a series of stars. In particular, Zheng defeated world No. 1 tennis player Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals, who is good on clay courts. Since the beginning of 2024, the career of the tennis player born in 2002 has been making a lot of progress. Before winning the Olympic gold medal, she had her first Grand Slam final in her career at the Australian Open. Zheng Qinwen also won several WTA tournaments and entered the world top 10. Her idol is Li Na, the only Chinese player to have won a Grand Slam at the 2011 French Open and the 2014 Australian Open. "I've always been a bit jealous of Li Na. She is not only the first Chinese but also the first Asian to win a Grand Slam. Now it's my turn to be the first Asian to win an Olympic singles gold medal. I've also made history, but there's still a long way to go. My dream has always been to win a Grand Slam," Zheng said of Li Na after winning the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal.
