Factors preventing businesses from going “green” in construction

Người Đưa TinNgười Đưa Tin30/04/2024

As a construction enterprise with a history of more than 30 years with many projects stretching from North to South, witnessing many turning points in the construction industry, talking to Nguoi Dua Tin (NDT), Mr. Le Viet Hai - Chairman of Hoa Binh Construction Group said that green building materials are gradually becoming a development trend of the construction industry.

Greening standards in construction are unclear.

Investor: The issue of environmental protection in the production and business process, reducing emissions into the environment is gradually being focused on in Vietnam as well as around the world in all industries. For the construction industry, the use of green materials is gradually becoming a trend, what do you think about this situation?

Mr. Le Viet Hai: Green building materials are products that are manufactured and used for construction activities but ensure strict environmental protection criteria such as non-toxicity, recyclability, long service life and energy saving production.

In particular, the interesting point of green building materials is that when the use period expires, the above materials can still be controlled so as not to cause harm to the human living environment. Therefore, in the context of environmental pollution issues that are increasingly of special concern in Vietnam, the criteria of green living and the use of green materials are gradually being chosen by many investors and gradually becoming a development trend of the construction industry.

Dialogue - Factors preventing businesses from moving towards

Mr. Le Viet Hai - Chairman of Hoa Binh Construction Group.

Investor: Although the development of green materials has been promoted, in reality green materials are still not widely used in Vietnam. In your opinion, what is the cause of this situation?

Mr. Le Viet Hai: In fact, a number of manufacturing facilities and large construction projects have switched to using green materials to minimize the impact on the environment and natural resources. However, despite receiving great support from the Government and users, it must be frankly acknowledged that in Vietnam, green materials are still not widely used due to many problems.

Lack of knowledge and experience in applying green materials in the construction process is one of the issues that makes investors skeptical about using green materials. Not to mention, the cost issue is also hindering businesses in moving towards “green” in construction. Most green materials are more expensive than traditional construction materials.

In addition, a sad reality that is happening in Vietnam is that the standards for greening in construction are not really clear, both consumers and investors do not understand the green criteria. Building a clear legal environment and promoting the sustainable development of the green materials industry plays an important role in promoting the development of this field, but in Vietnam, these criteria have not yet been specified.

Not a one day or two day story

Investor: From the perspective of businesses, in your opinion, in the coming time, what solutions are needed to promote greening in the construction industry, specifically guiding investors to use green materials and pay attention to sustainable development?

Mr. Le Viet Hai: To improve the above situation, the Vietnamese construction industry needs to proactively coordinate specific solutions, not a one-day or two-day story but a long-term change.

First, to promote green, environmentally friendly and energy-saving materials more strongly, Vietnam needs to pay attention to building a specific legal and technical corridor for green materials. From there, build specific regulations and standards to create financial policies to give incentives to research and development, and investment in the production of green materials.

It is especially important that the Ministry of Construction and relevant agencies develop more specific policies and solutions to address the outstanding issues that businesses are facing, thereby attracting business participation in this green process.

Second, it is necessary to improve the quality of human resources in applying green materials to construction production, preparing high-quality human resources with knowledge and experience in using green materials to supply to construction projects.

Dialogue - Factors preventing businesses from moving towards

Applying green building materials in the construction process will contribute to protecting the environment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In particular, the propaganda work on green products needs to be more widespread and thorough so that all subjects in society know and understand how the effects of greening in production and business will positively impact the living environment of each person.

For businesses, I think they should have a long-term strategic vision, aiming to protect the living environment of both customers and themselves, accepting to trade off some existing benefits for the common development of the whole society.

In the production and business process, enterprises should innovate equipment, improve automation, and improve product quality to ensure criteria. At the same time, do not forget to diversify product designs to suit the needs of the domestic and foreign construction market.

Investor: Thank you for taking the time to share !
