During the recent trip to the source organized by the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City for the delegation of outstanding people with meritorious services of the city to revisit the Quang Tri battlefield, there were moments when the service delegation was silent as they watched the ladies and gentlemen choking up while offering incense to their comrades' graves!

"I went to find my father's image," Ms. Nguyen Thi Truc Phuong (living in District 11), a specialist of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of District 11, emotionally shared. Present at the Truong Son National Martyrs' Cemetery (Quang Tri Province), Ms. Phuong's longing for her father came flooding back. Her father died when she was just 6 years old, and she only knew him through her mother's words. On this business trip, Ms. Phuong supported 2 men in District 11 to visit the old battlefield, which was also her most meaningful business trip. Ms. Phuong was active, along with her colleagues, in supporting the wounded soldiers, sick soldiers, and meritorious people... with every meal and sleep. She burst into tears when she saw the image of Mr. Tran Ba Hiep, who had to use crutches and had difficulty moving, but still tried to burn incense for many comrades.

This is the third time returning to Quang Tri Citadel, nearly 80-year-old soldier Pham Van Quang still cannot help but be choked with emotion when he revisits the old battlefield and lights incense to remember his comrades. He and his comrades were present in the fiercest 81-day and night battle at Quang Tri Citadel in 1972. “With an area of less than 4km2 , we had to endure more than 120,000 tons of American bombs, not counting the fierce artillery fire day and night. At that time, I was the political commissar of Company 11. The night before, I had just added a list of comrades to the battle, and the next night, my comrades had died. Even boats carrying martyrs across the river were hit by bombs! But with the will that “as long as the army remains, Quang Tri remains”, our comrades steadfastly held on”, Mr. Pham Van Quang recounted with tears in his eyes.

Find me, find teammates..

In the delegation of meritorious people, there was a veteran wearing a floppy hat, sitting and crying in front of a martyr's grave at Truong Son Cemetery. His name was Du Dinh Thanh (born in 1954, hometown Ung Hoa district, Hanoi), who found the grave of martyr Du Dinh Long, a cousin whose whereabouts have only recently been found. He died in October 1967, but after liberation, martyr Du Dinh Long's grave was gathered and laid to rest at Truong Son Cemetery.

Having just fixed the flowers on the grave, Mr. Thanh proudly told about the Du family temple in Hoa Phu village, Ung Hoa district, Hanoi, which currently has a board listing the names of heroes and martyrs of the family who sacrificed their lives in the two resistance wars. Martyr Du Dinh Long's family alone has 7 children, 4 of whom have joined the army. "This time I went with the group of meritorious people, finding him was a miracle. His mother is 99 years old, still waiting for information about him. The younger generation will forever be grateful to him and his comrades...", Mr. Thanh confided.

According to Deputy Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee's Mass Mobilization Commission Tran Xuan Dien - Head of the working group, Ho Chi Minh City is currently managing nearly 280,000 records of people with meritorious services and their relatives. Over the past time, the city has continuously built, recommended, proposed, revised, supplemented, and perfected the policy system for war invalids, martyrs, and people with meritorious services to the revolution. Many policies to care for and resolve preferential regimes for people with meritorious services to the revolution and their relatives have always received special attention. Towards the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025), with pride and deep gratitude to those who have contributed to the revolution, the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee organized a journey to the source with the theme "Visiting the Old Battlefield" for delegates who are typical meritorious services to the city.
