According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, China is the main import market for live crocodiles from Vietnam, the rest are countries such as Japan, Thailand, Singapore and some EU countries.
The export capacity of farms licensed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in the Southern region is more than 114,000 live crocodiles. However, only about 32,800 have been exported so far because Chinese Customs has not allowed the import of live crocodiles since the end of November 2019, even though they have been granted CITES.
Regarding farmed monkeys, the country has over 18,700 live monkeys for export (for scientific research purposes) from 2022 to the end of July 2024, mainly exported to countries such as the US, Japan, Spain, Korea...
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development stated that the negotiation and signing of the Protocols on exporting farmed monkeys and farmed crocodiles from Vietnam to China was a great effort over a long period of time by Vietnamese and Chinese agencies.
At the same time, he said that exporting farmed monkeys and crocodiles to the Chinese market will create many opportunities for Vietnamese businesses and breeders to develop, stabilize product output, and bring high economic benefits.
To achieve the expected results, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends that the local agricultural sector, businesses, and livestock breeders fully study the contents of the Protocol and domestic regulations to have a plan for organizing production and sustainable development.
Regarding the management of monkey and crocodile farming, the local agricultural sector shall plan the farming areas, ensuring strict compliance with Vietnamese and international laws. Guide and require breeding facilities to fully comply with veterinary hygiene procedures and measures and measures to prevent and control diseases in monkeys and crocodiles, ensuring that no epidemics arise that affect the lives of people in the farming areas.

In order for the crocodile industry in Dong Thap province to continue to develop sustainably, Mr. Pham Thien Nghia - Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development direct specialized units to guide and support localities, businesses, and crocodile farming households in procedures and organize testing for diseases as required for exporting crocodiles to China according to the provisions of the Protocol. At the same time, organize the construction of an information and data management system, ensuring the traceability of crocodiles and crocodile diseases.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that the Mekong Delta region has great potential and advantages in crocodile farming. In Dong Thap province alone, the crocodile farming movement is developing well.
To develop monkey and crocodile farming sustainably, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien requested the local agricultural sector to create favorable conditions for businesses and units to develop monkey and crocodile farming. Monkey and crocodile farming must be carried out in the direction of biodiversity and traceability to meet export quality standards.
In addition, legal documents should be issued that are close to reality for the monkey and crocodile farming industry. In particular, businesses and breeding units must inspect and select individuals with good breeding sources for replication, and proactively contact partners to expand the export direction of monkeys and crocodiles.
Currently, Vietnam has 278 crocodile farms with more than 674,000 crocodiles. In Dong Thap alone, there are 36 facilities and households raising crocodiles under CITES with a total herd of about 190,000 individuals. Of which, My Hiep private enterprise was granted a certificate by the CITES management agency of Vietnam to breed freshwater crocodiles for commercial and export purposes, with a total herd of over 177,000 individuals; the remaining 35 households mainly domesticate young crocodiles.
