Captured tank broken, Ukrainian officer calls for support from Russia

The T-72B3 tank, a Uralvagonzavod tank in Nizhny Tagil, is one of Russia's modern tanks. Unlike the T-64BV, T-80U or T-72AMT, the Ukrainian army has little experience with this tank.

When a tanker with the call sign “Kochevnik” encountered some problems with his captured T-72B3 that local experts could not solve, he called Uralvagonzavod for technical support. And surprisingly, the support line helped him.

Militarnyi recorded his call on video.

Kochevnik was a member of the Ukrainian army's 54th Mechanized Brigade, which fought around Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine and used a lot of Soviet-era equipment, including T-64 tanks and BMP combat vehicles. The brigade also had a number of captured T-72B3 tanks from the Russian army.

Kochevnik called mainly to poke fun at the Russians. But the problems he encountered with the 45-ton, three-man tank were real: the tank kept leaking oil and the compressor on the tank wouldn't work. The electrical system controlling the turret kept breaking down, forcing the tank crew to rotate the turret by hand.

While other tanks may have had similar problems, the number of problems Kochevnik had with this tank clearly shows the "unstable workmanship" of the Uralvagonzavod workshops.

The Russian on the other end of the phone, who introduced himself as Aleksander Anatolevich, completely unaware that Kochevnik was a Ukrainian soldier, promised to pass on these issues to the design department in Nizhny Tagil and to contact the engine manufacturing company in Chelyabinsk.

Kochevnik was still not satisfied. He contacted Andrey Abakumov, a director of Uralvagonzavod. Mr. Abakumov asked him to describe the tank's problems in detail via WhatsApp.

Kochevnik then revealed that he was a Ukrainian soldier and that his country's army had seized the problematic tank around the end of 2022 in Izium.

Kochevnik burst out laughing and ended the call.
