The Premier League play-off final has long been called “the most expensive football match on the planet”. A ticket to play in England’s top flight will bring clubs an income of more than £100 million next season.
Both Leeds and Southampton started the game with determination. However, Southampton were the team that took advantage of the opportunity better. With just a precise arrangement in the middle, “The Saints” opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Striker Adam Armstrong broke through, before firing a cross-angle shot, putting Southampton ahead.
Southampton promoted after hard-fought victory.
Leeds tried to push forward for the rest of the game but could not make a difference against their opponents' solid defense. In the 49th minute, "The Whites" had a golden opportunity to bring the play-off final back to the starting line. However, two of their players fought for the ball, allowing the Southampton defender to promptly clear the ball.
In the second half, Daniel James, a former MU star, came on and stirred up Southampton's defense. He had two dangerous shots but the ball hit the crossbar and was blocked by the opposing goalkeeper.
The match at Wembley ended with only one goal scored, belonging to Southampton. The Saint Mary's team will return to the Premier League after only one season playing in the Championship. Southampton's manager, Russell Martin, is only 38 years old this year. It also took him exactly one year to bring the Southeast English club back to the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Leeds missed out on the Premier League. The Elland Road outfit have lost all four promotion play-off finals they have ever played in and will have to wait at least another season to get back into the top flight.
Southampton will join Championship champions Leicester and runners-up Ipswich Town in the Premier League, while Luton, Burnley and Sheffield are relegated from the Premier League.
