Quang Ngai Province, located in the central region of Vietnam, is heavily affected by climate change, with extreme weather events such as storms, floods, droughts and landslides. Traditional farming practices, especially slash-and-burn agriculture, have exacerbated environmental degradation, causing deforestation, soil erosion and reduced agricultural productivity. Over the past decade, Quang Ngai has lost more than 3,000 hectares of forest, which has had a significant impact on ethnic minority communities who depend on agriculture and forestry for their livelihoods.
In this context, the Project “Sustainable Agroforestry Models to Enhance Climate Change Adaptation in Quang Ngai Province” (ESAR) was implemented to promote sustainable agroforestry models and build capacity for communities to better adapt to climate change. The project has a budget of more than 2 billion VND, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark and implemented by WVIV.
The project focuses on training government officials, mass organizations and farmers in sustainable agroforestry techniques and climate change adaptation strategies. Community groups will also be established to promote knowledge exchange and support sustainable agricultural practices. These interventions are also in line with the Danish Government’s development cooperation strategy for 2021-2025, which focuses on enhancing climate resilience and sustainable development in vulnerable areas.

Specifically, the project will be piloted in Ba To commune of Ba To district, Long Hiep commune of Minh Long district, Son Giang commune of Son Ha district and Son Tra commune of Tra Bong district. 120 farming households in these 4 project communes will receive support to plant native trees to contribute to improving forest land and creating livelihoods for farming households.
Mr. Lu Dinh Tich, Vice Chairman of Ba To District, highly appreciated the effectiveness of the models implemented by WVIV in Quang Ngai Province. The ESAR project, which will be implemented in the coming time, will help improve the livelihoods of the community, while contributing to the replanting of trees on bare land and hills in 4 districts. Mr. Lu Dinh Tich pledged to actively cooperate to help the Project bring the best results.
“Through the ESAR project, we aim to restore and protect landscapes, increase climate resilience and ensure sustainable natural resources for future generations,” said Dr. Ngo Tho Hung, Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Response Program Specialist of World Vision International in Vietnam.
