On November 22, in Dien Bien Phu city (Dien Bien), World Vision International in Vietnam held a workshop to summarize the project "Enhancing disaster risk resilience for ethnic minorities in Dien Bien province" (IREM).
The program was attended by representatives of the People's Committee of Dien Bien province, leaders of World Vision International in Vietnam, leaders of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Education and Training, representatives of departments, branches, unions of Dien Bien province, representatives of districts, communes and partners of the IREM project.

According to the report at the Workshop, the IREM Project is funded by the German Relief Alliance (ADH) and implemented by World Vision for 14 months (October 2023-November 2024) in three districts of Muong Cha, Tuan Giao, Muong Ang and Dien Bien Phu city (Dien Bien province). The project aims to reduce disaster risks and improve the lives of more than 66,700 people, including more than 33,400 children, especially vulnerable groups such as poor households, children, single parents and people with disabilities.
Throughout the workshop, delegates shared and discussed the results of the project implementation, lessons learned and solutions to maintain and replicate the project results in the future. At the same time, they acknowledged the important contributions of local partners in effectively implementing the project activities.
Specifically, after more than a year of implementation, the Project has achieved positive results in supporting ethnic minority communities in Dien Bien province to improve their resilience to natural disasters. The Project has helped improve the awareness and capacity of people, teachers and students in responding to extreme natural disasters such as flash floods, landslides, droughts, forest fires, severe cold, etc.

Mr. Tran Van Thuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dien Bien province, said that the success of the IREM Project lies not only in the current numbers or results, but also in its long-term significance. The project has built a team of provincial-level source lecturers on Disaster Risk Management and Safe School Framework with more than 50 lecturers certified as provincial lecturers. Disaster Prevention Teams/Groups have also been established in communes, villages, and schools to be ready to respond to natural disasters, ensuring the safety of people, teachers, and students.

According to Mr. Stanislaus Rozario, Director of Finance and Support Services of World Vision International in Vietnam, the IREM Project has promoted strong participation from all levels of government, local agencies, teachers, students and community members. This joint effort has played a key role in the success of the Project. When the Project ends, the results achieved will be handed over to local authorities and communities for continued maintenance and promotion.
