That is the goal of World Vision International in Vietnam in its journey to improve sustainable livelihoods and enhance the quality of life for poor, near-poor, disadvantaged, low-income households, households with children, especially vulnerable children in Vietnam.
Journey out of poverty
Before 2020, the family of Mr. LV Ha (40 years old, in Nhu Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province) was a poor household with elderly parents and two children who were often sick. Mr. Ha had to do all kinds of hard manual work from construction work, porterage to planting acacia trees, but his income was still unstable, and the family often fell into poverty.
In 2021, Mr. Ha's family joined the Uplifting Poverty Livelihood Group (UPG) of World Vision International in Vietnam (WVIV). He was trained in farming, animal husbandry and financial management. He received support of 200 chickens and ducks, along with feed and veterinary medicine. After 3 months, the first batch of chickens brought in an income of about 10 million VND. Taking advantage of this capital, he continued to participate in other support models such as the Savings Group (S4T) and the Microfinance Program.

Thanks to his ability to utilize resources, Mr. Ha’s family life has changed positively. The old, dilapidated house made of bamboo has now been replaced with a spacious tiled roof. A stable income helps his children go to school and his elderly parents receive better care.
“Thanks to WVIV, we not only received capital support but also were equipped with knowledge about scientific farming and animal husbandry. In addition, I was guided on how to plan family spending to avoid risks and prepare well for adaptive technical measures even when natural disasters and epidemics occur,” said Mr. Ha.
According to Ms. LT Anh, Mr. Ha's wife, the couple previously earned only about 200,000 - 250,000 VND/day from their hired work, with an unstable income. Currently, the family has reached an average income of 12 million VND/month, helping them escape poverty and stabilize their lives.
Long term commitment
The livelihood support that Mr. LV Ha's family received was part of the Nhu Xuan Region Program implemented by WVIV from 2009 to 2026. Through the Program, the percentage of parents and caregivers who were able to provide well for their children increased from 83.2% to 94.1%; the percentage of business households effectively applying knowledge to promote markets, build networks and improve income increased from 58.1% to 76%; the percentage of adolescents with learning opportunities to lead successful lives increased from 73.2% to 100%.
To continue supporting people to develop stable and sustainable livelihoods, in 2023, WVIV launched the Project “Transforming Sustainable Household Livelihoods” (THRIVE 2030). The Project will continue to apply, develop and replicate models of Savings Groups (S4T), Microfinance Programs, Guaranteed Livelihoods (BSL).
The project focuses on four areas: community development based on internal resources; supporting households to access financial services; market linkage and local value chain development; operational improvement and digital transformation application to maximize operational efficiency.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Dung, THRIVE 2030 Project Manager, said that the Project is currently being implemented in 9 Regional Programs where WVIV is currently operating licensed support activities. With a total budget of more than 12 million USD and implemented over 7 years (2023 - 2030), the Project is expected to improve sustainable livelihoods and enhance the quality of life of more than 60,300 poor, near-poor, disadvantaged, low-income households, households with children, especially the most vulnerable children, with a total expected number of beneficiaries of more than 300,000 people. To date, after one year of implementation, the Project has reached more than 36,500 people.
Mr. Doseba Tua Sinay, Chief Representative of WVIV emphasized that THRIVE 2030 is one of WVIV's efforts to fulfill its commitment to ensuring child welfare through sustainable livelihood development, improving income and enhancing the quality of life of the most vulnerable communities in Vietnam.
WVIV is a non-governmental organization founded in 1950 in the United States. Operating in Vietnam since 1988, WVIV has implemented programs and projects in 14 provinces and cities across the country. |
