Two years ago, Medvedev defeated Djokovic in the US Open final in three sets and this year the Serbian succeeded in winning in three sets to be crowned champion.
Medvedev started the final match with a bit of a sloppy start. The Russian player was unable to defend successfully against Djokovic's strong attacks, losing the first serve game (2-0).
Just 1 break was enough for Djokovic to create a turning point because he played perfectly in his service games, never giving his opponent a chance to break the game and moving towards a 6-3 victory.
The two players played closely in the second set, chasing the score fiercely. Medvedev successfully saved a break-point, Djokovic saved 2 break-points to protect all service games and push the set into a tie-break.
The third seed got an early mini break, taking a 2-0 lead. However, Djokovic came back to win 7-5 with 2 mini breaks.
After two intense sets, both players' stamina was severely depleted. In the third set, Djokovic took a 3-1 lead after playing well in the fourth game, but in the following game, the Serbian player made many errors, allowing Medvedev to demand a break.
Unfortunately, the Russian player still could not find good form in his service games, he let Djokovic continue to take the lead 4-2 after the 6th game.
The opportunity to win once again opened up for Djokovic, the Serbian player quickly seized it, he only dropped 2 points in the next 2 service games, thereby determining the result 6-3 and ending the final match after 3 hours and 16 minutes.
