This year’s dry season has been long, with no rain for many months in a row, causing many forest fires in the province. In Tam Dao National Park, with its thick layer of dry vegetation, many fires have recently occurred.
According to data from Tam Dao National Park, in January 2025 alone, 19 forest fires were recorded - double the number of forest fires that occurred in 2024 in the Park. In particular, the number of forest fires occurred more frequently in areas bordering residential areas. In the forest area of Minh Quang commune, Tam Dao district, the Park's forest rangers discovered and extinguished 12 fires in January 2025.
During the dry months, especially December and January, especially the days before Tet, forest fires were continuously recorded in the management area of the Park. Thanks to the timely detection and mobilization of forces by the forest rangers to participate in fire fighting, the fires were quickly controlled, prevented from spreading and minimized damage to the forest. Most of the fires burned the understory under the forest canopy, so they did not cause damage to perennial trees.
Tam Dao National Park is located on the administrative boundaries of 3 provinces: Vinh Phuc, Thai Nguyen and Tuyen Quang. Vinh Phuc area alone has 15,000 hectares, of which nearly 5,600 hectares are flammable forests. The risk of forest fires is mainly in the dry season, when the dead ground cover, combined with dry branches and fallen leaves, accumulates to form a layer of flammable materials. In particular, people in the buffer zone adjacent to Tam Dao National Park still have careless fire-using behaviors, which are also the causes of annual forest fires here.
Identifying the management, protection, and prevention of forest fires as one of the important tasks, every year, Tam Dao National Park deploys the construction of a system of firebreaks surrounding planted forests and forest plots prone to fire to limit the spread of fire between forest plots when a forest fire occurs. The Forest Ranger Stations have conducted field surveys and identified the most convenient routes and trails leading to key fire hotspots. At the same time, they have sent people to guide the fire fighting force to approach the fire quickly and conveniently.
