During the recent holiday, Nhat Tam Farm vineyard (Dinh Cong Chanh street, Long Hoa ward, Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) welcomed a large number of visitors to visit and experience. Visitors were impressed not only by the heavy bunches of grapes on Can Tho land but also by seeing and enjoying peony grapes for the first time - a rare and expensive grape variety.

The owner of Nhat Tam Farm, Mr. Nguyen Ba Duy, 57 years old, said: The vineyard is grown in a closed house with an area of about 3,000m2. The garden mainly grows peony grapes, the rest grow common grape varieties in the market such as black summer grapes, black finger grapes, Ninh Thuan grapes... After 15 months of planting and caring, the vineyard has produced a crop of grapes, serving visitors and harvesting fruit for sale on the occasion of the recent April 30 holiday. "The crop of grapes has a fairly good yield. Besides, I have also gained a lot of experience to take care of the vineyard in the following crops," said Mr. Duy.
Peony grapes are a famous grape variety, originating from Japan. Later, this grape variety was brought to Korea and is equally famous worldwide. Peony grapes are characterized by round, seedless fruit with a very thin, light green skin. Ripe fruit is full of water, has a sweet, elegant taste. If you try eating peony grapes and common grapes, many people will understand why peony grapes are so expensive, sometimes up to nearly a million VND per kilo.
Mr. Nguyen Ba Duy said that he used to live in Long Hoa, Binh Thuy, and more than 20 years ago, he went to Ho Chi Minh City to start a business. He was a businessman, but due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, business was not favorable, so he thought about returning to his hometown to start a business. Having known and loved peony grapes before, he chose this grape variety to grow in Can Tho. Mr. Duy recalled: “My first difficulty was not being supported by my family, because grapes are not a typical plant in the locality. When my neighbors heard that I was building a grape garden, they thought it was impossible. But I believed I could do it.” Nhat Tam Farm grape garden, in which Mr. Duy invested billions of dong, is showing clear economic efficiency, proving that his determination was correct.
The vineyard is grown entirely in a closed house system and is equipped with a convection fan system for cooling, an irrigation system, all controlled by an automated system. According to Mr. Duy, the peony grape has many advantages such as high resistance, good growth ability, easy to bloom... The most difficult thing about this plant is that if not handled properly, the flowers and young fruits are easy to fall off. In addition, to make each grape meet the standards, even and beautiful, it is necessary to cut off the substandard fruits from a young age. Mr. Duy emphasized this and explained that, because the peony grape has a high price, many people are reluctant to prune it. That is why the bunch of grapes when ripe will not have a beautiful shape, the fruits will be big, small, distorted and intertwined, reducing the quality. A mature grape tree produces many bunches of fruit, each bunch weighs from 500 grams to 700 grams. The season for grapes to produce high quality fruit is to process the flowers right after Tet and harvest in the 5th lunar month.
During the recent holiday, Nhat Tam Farm piloted selling tickets to welcome visitors to the vineyard and received many positive responses on social media platforms. Each VND50,000 ticket will include tasting grapes at the table, a bowl of tofu and a bottle of water, along with a tour and experience of the vineyard. Ms. Dang Thi Van Anh, a tourist from Ninh Kieu district, said: "I learned about the vineyard through an introduction on social media. The vineyard is very beautiful and clean, I have taken many beautiful pictures". Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ha, a tourist from Hau Giang province, exclaimed: "I didn't think that the West could grow such good vineyards, and it was peony grapes too".
Currently, Mr. Duy also opens additional culinary services for tourists such as banh xeo, nem nuong... Mr. Duy said: The vineyard is just in the beginning stages of completion, in the near future, he will expand the culinary area, planting grapes on the entire land. From Dinh Cong Chanh Street, visitors will take interesting steps under the lush grape canopy. Mr. Duy's passion is to successfully propagate peony grapes to provide and transfer techniques to people in the growing area, ensuring fruit consumption when harvested.
