According to French media, Ferrara was arrested in Belgium after a failed robbery in Germany.
"The criminal Antonio Ferrara has been arrested," Retailleau wrote on social network X, praising the police forces for their professionalism and appreciating the "exemplary cooperation" of Belgian authorities.
Ferrara is famous for his shocking escape from Fresnes maximum security prison, near Paris, in 2003. His accomplice blew up the prison gates and opened fire with an AK-47 to free him.
Ferrara had previously served time in prison for bank robberies, a 1998 prison break and a host of other crimes. His out-of-the-ordinary exploits made him a legend in the French criminal world.
The arrest of Antonio Ferrara marks a major victory in the fight against crime by French and Belgian authorities. Authorities are now considering the possibility of Ferrara's extradition to France to continue serving his sentence.
