On the morning of May 12, social networks were abuzz with the article "looking for information about taxi drivers who ripped off Western customers in Hanoi".

"The driver collected 500,000 VND from a foreign passenger taking a taxi from Tran Nhat Duat to Cho Gao Street (Hanoi). Later, because the passenger forgot his passport in the car, the driver returned it and asked for another 500,000 VND," the post quoted.

Talking to Dan Tri reporter, Mrs. M. (French nationality) said this was the first time she and her husband came to Vietnam for tourism.

The two arrived in Vietnam about a week ago, visiting Tam Coc (Ninh Binh), Sa Pa (Lao Cai), and Hanoi. This morning, they boarded a boat to Cat Ba (Hai Phong), planning to experience the boat ride.

Mrs. M. and her husband complained that the taxi driver "ripped them off" and asked for more money when they forgot their passport and wallet (Photo: Provided by the character).

According to the guest, on the night of May 11, the two took a bus from Sa Pa to the bus company's office at 114 Tran Nhat Duat (Hang Buom Ward, Hoan Kiem District). There, they caught a random taxi to 9 Cho Gao.

"When we arrived, the driver locked the back door and asked us to pay 500,000 VND to get out of the car," said Ms. M. In reality, the distance from 114 Tran Nhat Duat to 9 Cho Gao is less than 200m.

After the driver left, the husband discovered that the passenger had forgotten his wallet and passport. The taxi driver returned to return the belongings and demanded an additional 500,000 VND.

"We had to pay more to get our property back. My husband and I were very upset, we sent pictures of the taxi and driver and described the incident, and asked the tour guide to report the information to the authorities," Ms. M. added that the incident had affected her and her husband's psychology.

The taxi was accused by a Western passenger of "overcharging" (Photo: Provided by the character).

Mr. S., the person who posted the information and was also the tour guide in charge of picking up the two guests, said he had contacted the hotline number posted on the taxi, but the company said the car had terminated the contract.

A representative of Sao Thu Do taxi company said that the owner of the car with license plate 30E-112... had worked with the company two years ago and is no longer active. The car has a "Grab Taxi" sign, but a Sao Thu Do phone number sticker.

"The owner of the car we worked with sold the car to someone else. The current driver is no longer affiliated with the company so we do not have any information," the representative said.

The leader of the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem district said that the district police are verifying and clarifying the incident.
