“Seeing smoke and fire billowing up, I shouted and ran with everyone to the second floor stairs. I quickly took the mask from my pocket and put it on, then followed the path upstairs,” recalled Nguyen Viet Cuong (born in 1968), a survivor of the fire at a coffee shop on Pham Van Dong Street.
At the time of the fire, the shop lost power and was plunged into darkness. He turned on his phone's flashlight to find his way. When he reached the second floor, Mr. Cuong gradually fainted. When he regained consciousness, he found himself in the hospital. "A group of 6 friends went out for drinks last night, and now I am the only one who escaped," he said.
As for Ms. Hong, Mr. Cuong's wife, she said that at nearly 2am, she received a strange phone call asking if it was Mr. Cuong's family. She thought it was a scam. When she heard that he had an accident, she was so weak that she immediately went to the hospital to find her husband.
At E Hospital, Mr. Cuong was diagnosed with smoke poisoning and respiratory failure, and doctors continued to monitor him.

On the morning of December 19, Mr. Nguyen Cong Huu, Director of E Hospital, said that regarding the fire at the coffee shop on Pham Van Dong Street, the unit received four patients, two men and two women, who were admitted to the hospital in a state of panic, with many injuries on their bodies and burns on their skin.
The two people with more serious injuries were transferred to the intensive care unit, showing signs of difficulty breathing and suspected gas poisoning. The other two were treated in the emergency room in less serious condition. One person suffered minor burns to the eyes and the other had skin abrasions.
A police officer suffered minor injuries and skin abrasions while on duty at the fire scene. He was taken to Hospital 198 for first aid and then discharged that same night.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh, Director of Hanoi 115 Emergency Center, immediately after receiving the information, the unit mobilized 2/3 of its force to organize emergency response at the scene, including 9 ambulances with 31 medical staff. Two ambulances from E Hospital and Nam Thang Long Hospital were also dispatched to the scene.
11 bodies were taken to Hospital 198 by Emergency 115. By this morning, some bodies were identifiable and the police had handed them over to their families. Some bodies were charred black and the authorities are in the process of identifying them.
