One of the ways women entertain themselves is to watch movies late at night, partly because they have trouble sleeping and partly because they are busy during the day - Photo: YEN TRINH
Watching movies alone in the living room
Talking about her hobby of watching movies, Ms. Dung Vu (30 years old, living in Thuan An, Binh Duong) became more excited. She said that there was a period when she... indulged in detective and crime-solving thriller movies on an online platform. "I watch about 3 nights a week, each night about 2 hours until 12 o'clock. If the movie is interesting, I watch it until 4 o'clock before going to sleep," she said.
At night, she lies on the sofa and turns on the TV to watch movies. She prioritizes popular movies or movies on the charts. Later, when she got pregnant, she switched to watching cartoons, "about two hours or less so there's no need to watch late at night."
After giving birth, every night when she had trouble sleeping, she would browse shopping apps. She said: "After my baby fell asleep, I would pick up my phone to browse to avoid the baby being exposed to the blue light from the screen, which is not good. I often clicked to look at things for myself, things for my baby, food, candy, and other miscellaneous things for my baby. I browsed until I felt sleepy, which was 1-2 hours."
Mr. Duy Phuc (46 years old, living in Tan Phu district, Ho Chi Minh City) shared that his wife is more addicted to romance novels than she is to shopping or gossiping.
During the day, he comes home early, and after dinner at night, his wife, Quyen, makes tea to stay awake. One day she holds a jar of watermelon seeds, another day she chews on sunflower seeds, and reads a novel.
Sometimes at 1am, he woke up and went to the other room to see his wife still reading the story attentively. He reminded her: "Honey, go to sleep." She would mumble, sometimes scold him for being "so rude", interrupting her flow of emotions. She thought that reading at night was more peaceful and focused.
He kept reminding her but she didn't budge, and he was worried about her health, but then he realized: "Well, my wife is addicted to novels and doesn't do anything dangerous. It's just like I like to go drinking or play chess. That's my wife's preference so I respect it. If we keep talking about it, we'll just glare at each other."
For Ms. Lan Vy (living in Cu Chi district), both husband and wife like to play games on their phones. They are just games like candy stacking, fruit cutting… but neither of them gets bored.
"Whenever I feel too sleepy, I fall asleep. My two children sleep in the next room so I can play games freely. During the day, I have to worry about preparing goods for sale, so I don't have any entertainment," she said.
Sharing housework, wife has time to relax sooner
Except for women who are relatively free and used to staying up late to entertain themselves, many cases of "performing" their nighttime hobbies are due to being busy with work and children during the day. From the story of wives becoming night owls, couples also discuss sharing their own work and hobbies more.
Dung Vu said that her husband would sometimes open his eyes and see her still holding her phone, so he would advise her to go to sleep. "Before, my husband used to say that if he was too engrossed in watching movies, he should watch them during the day, why do he keep watching them at night? But I'm used to staying up late at night and feeling sleepy during the day," she said.

For many people, late night is like a close friend. In return, they try to build a healthier daytime routine.
Dung Vu said that recently at 5am she practices yoga three times a week to make her body more resilient. Then she prepares her child's things for kindergarten. "I start working at 8am, then pick up my child in the afternoon. From 10pm onwards I spend time for myself. I surf the web, watch movies, and sometimes listen to soothing music to help me sleep," she shared.
The couple agreed to share the housework, so everything was easier. Although there was no clear division, the wife and husband always voluntarily did one thing each. When she bathed the children, he cooked. She washed the dishes, he hung the clothes out to dry… If one was busy, the other volunteered to do everything.
In the case of Mr. Duy Phuc and his wife, although he now feels that his wife's hobby of reading stories late at night is normal, sometimes he "feels annoyed with himself".
His wife often woke up tired and grumpy. Sometimes she seemed to be immersed in some plot of a novel. The number of books in the house kept increasing over time, and he joked that someday… selling old books would also make a lot of money.
Be careful not to become chronic insomnia
Nowadays, it is difficult for women to sleep early while there are so many hobbies "flying" around: watching movies, reading stories, playing games, surfing the internet, hunting for promotional items... But according to Ms. Dung Vu, she is trying to keep those hobbies from happening too late at night, affecting her work spirit during the day.
Ms. Lan Vy also admitted that her sleep after playing games is often not complete, waking up in the morning with a hazy mind, easily "getting angry" when someone says something unpleasant.
