Lagos International Classics 2024 is a Challenge level tournament in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) competition system. This level tournament is where young players and players who are accumulating points to improve their world rankings such as Le Duc Phat and Nguyen Hai Dang participate.
Ranked 68th in the world, Le Duc Phat was selected as the number 1 seed in the men's singles. Despite a tight schedule of 2 matches per day, the player from the Army still proved his ability with 4 consecutive wins to advance to the final match against Indian player Samarveer (ranked 362nd in the world).
Le Duc Phat traveled a long way to Africa to compete in the Lagos International Classics 2024 (Nigeria) and was rewarded with the men's singles championship title.
The 19-year-old Indian player played very well. After losing to Duc Phat 10/21 in the first set, Samarveer won 21/18 in the second set to tie the score at 1-1. The third set was a fierce battle between the two players, with Le Duc Phat exploding at the crucial moment, rising to win 22/20, closing out the overall victory at 2-1 after 1 hour and 4 minutes of competition.
The men's singles championship title at the Lagos International Classics 2024 earned Le Duc Phat 4,000 bonus points. With this score, he will close in on the world's top 50 in the new BWF rankings announcement. This player's goal in 2024 is also to successfully conquer the world's top 50. After this tournament, Le Duc Phat will return to Ho Chi Minh City to compete in the Vietnam Open badminton tournament from September 10 to 15. This is a tournament at the BWF Tour Super 100 level, higher than the Challenge level.
