On the evening of September 22 local time, or the morning of September 23 Hanoi time, at the United Nations headquarters in New York City (USA), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired the ceremony to celebrate the 78th anniversary of National Day (September 2) and the 46th anniversary of Vietnam's accession to the United Nations.
Also attending the ceremony were President of the 78th United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis; representatives of United Nations organizations, UN member countries, international organizations; close friends of Vietnam and leaders of ministries, sectors, and Vietnamese officials working and living in the US.
According to VNA, speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that 46 years ago, Vietnam joined the United Nations, participated in sharing and contributing to the implementation of the common goals of the United Nations, as expressed by President Ho Chi Minh in a letter to the President of the first session of the United Nations General Assembly in 1946.
"Vietnam's history of formation, struggle and development has always been associated with the values and principles of the United Nations, and is part of the common flow of the international community," the Prime Minister affirmed.
According to the Prime Minister, the journey of nearly 8 decades of national founding and nearly 40 years of renovation has witnessed strong changes in Vietnam. From an aid recipient country, today, Vietnam has the second largest rice export output in the world.
From a country devastated by decades of war, today, Vietnam has made great strides in hunger eradication, poverty reduction, and the implementation of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals.
Vietnam today is one of the top 40 economies in the world, in the group of 20 economies with the largest trade scale.
Vietnam today is ready to welcome international friends, telling new stories about a peaceful and stable country, about a hard-working, diligent, dynamic, creative and aspirational people - stories about an independent, self-reliant Vietnam, a friend, a reliable partner and an active, responsible member of the international community.
The Prime Minister made it clear that Vietnam is ready to share its stories and lessons learned to make more important and practical contributions to the common work of the United Nations.
Speaking at the event, President of the 78th United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis congratulated Vietnam on its 78th National Day and said that after 78 years of independence, Vietnam has changed and developed extraordinarily, from a poor country to a middle-income and dynamic country with a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
Since joining the United Nations, Vietnam has actively promoted multilateralism, fully implemented and upheld the values of the United Nations Charter, been a member of the United Nations Security Council, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and participated in the peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. This demonstrates Vietnam's commitment to the common goals of the United Nations and has been realized in meaningful contributions to the common work of the United Nations.
President of the 78th session of the United Nations Dennis Francis hopes that Vietnam will continue to participate and contribute more to the goals of the United Nations; reaffirms support for all members, including Vietnam, in implementing the United Nations Charter, sustainable development goals and providing a roadmap towards future summits.
