3 Vietnamese universities and colleges fall in rankings

On September 28, the UK's Times Higher Education (THE) ranking organization announced the results of the 2024 World University Rankings (THE WUR 2024). This is the ranking with the largest number of participating higher education institutions, with 2,673 units from 127 countries and territories.

Vietnam continues to have 6 representatives ranked, including: Duy Tan University, Ton Duc Thang University, Hanoi National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hue University and Ho Chi Minh City National University.

Ranking of Vietnamese universities on THE WUR 2024 rankings

According to the announced results, Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University are both in the 601-800 group in the world, continuing to lead Vietnamese universities, but have dropped in rank compared to the 401-500 position in 2023.

Hanoi National University is ranked in the 1,201-1,500 group out of 1,904 ranked higher education institutions (last year the university was in the 1,001-1,200 group).

Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hue University all ranked 1,501+, maintaining their rankings compared to last year.

In this ranking, Hanoi National University continues to consolidate its position in training activities when the teaching criteria is ranked first in Vietnam with 20.9 points (on a scale of 100, an increase of 2.2 points compared to THE WUR 2023 ranking).

Following are Hanoi University of Science and Technology (15.7 points), Ho Chi Minh City National University (14.6 points), Hue University (13.3 points), Ton Duc Thang University (12.9 points) and Duy Tan University (12.1 points).

Meanwhile, Ton Duc Thang University and Duy Tan University have strengths in research quality with 90.6 and 87.5 points, much higher than other units such as Hue University (16.4 points) and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (46.8 points).

Although there is a large gap in research quality, in terms of research environment, Vietnamese universities are not much different, fluctuating between 8.7 - 16/100 points.

The results of THE WUR 2024 ranking criteria are analyzed from more than 134 million citations of 16.5 million scientific publications on the Scopus database and survey data of 68,402 scholars worldwide.

Notably, Ho Chi Minh City Open University entered the world university rankings for the first time, but with the status of "reporter". This means that this unit and 768 other organizations are not ranked because they only meet certain criteria, not all requirements, but are making efforts to be ranked (according to THE's explanation).

Rating based on new set of 18 criteria

In the THE WUR 2024 ranking, THE ranking organization used a new set of criteria (THE WUR 3.0) including 18 evaluation criteria in 5 groups of criteria: teaching, research environment, research quality, transfer and internationalization level.

Also according to the results of THE WUR 2024, the top 5 leading universities in the world are Oxford University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and Cambridge University.

In Asia, top universities include: Tsinghua University and Peking University (China), National University of Singapore, University of Tokyo, Nanyang Technological University - Singapore, University of Hong Kong.
