Why is your hair falling out so much?

VnExpressVnExpress15/07/2023

Using chemicals to dye or style your hair, stress or taking medication, or hormonal changes can cause hair loss.

Dr. Ta Tung Duy, Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, said that hair loss is related to the hair life cycle. The hair growth cycle goes through three different phases. The growing phase lasts 2-8 years, followed by the transition phase, after which the hair stops growing and moves into the final phase in just a few weeks. At this point, old hairs are pushed out of the hair follicle and the process of new hair growth begins.

Excessive hair loss, for example if simply running your fingers through your hair causes unusual hair loss, could be due to your hair styling habits or an underlying health problem.

Here are some reasons for hair loss:

Stress

Unusual hair loss can be caused by a condition called telogen effluvium – hair loss that occurs after a period of stress. These stressors include illness, rapid weight changes, job loss, death of a loved one or divorce.

Chemical

Hair beauty is an indispensable need, but hair curling, dyeing, straightening chemicals or mechanical impact of hair dryers and curling irons increase pressure on hair. The hair core becomes dry, hair follicles shrink and strands fall out a lot.

Head washing

Hair loss when washing hair is very common, because at this time the hair follicles are loose and fall out more than usual. Using shampoo that is not suitable for the scalp can damage the hair follicles. Brushing hair when it is wet and tangled can also cause hair loss.

Medications, hormones

Certain medications used to treat cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression can cause hair loss. Pregnancy, childbirth, thyroid problems, and menopause, iron or protein deficiencies, and hormonal issues can cause hair loss.

Behavioral disorders

Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder in which a person pulls hair out of their scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes, often resulting in excessive hair loss and bald patches on the scalp.

If you lose an unusual amount of hair or hair loss - an average of more than 100 strands a day - see your doctor for a check-up. Photo: Health

According to doctors, there are many ways to help take better care of your hair so that it does not fall out easily. First, you should use a wide-toothed comb to untangle your hair, being careful not to run your fingers through it or twist it. Next, using gentle products such as hair-friendly shampoo and applying conditioner every time you wash your hair can help reduce breakage. Limit the use of heat such as hair dryers or curling irons; limit the use of chemicals such as curling irons and dyes that make your hair weak and prone to breakage.

A balanced diet with adequate protein and iron is essential for healthy, beautiful hair. If you notice an unusual amount of hair loss - an average of more than 100 strands per day - see your doctor to determine the cause and get the right treatment.
