Why do students struggle to accumulate practice points?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên14/06/2023

The training score is one of the mandatory conditions in the learning and graduation process of students. Therefore, despite the tight schedule, students still have to participate in many extracurricular activities to accumulate enough average score.

Ask for someone else's certificate to submit evidence

Under the recent post discussing training points on the Ho Chi Minh City Student Association's fanpage, many comments said that training points are becoming a "burden" for students. Since then, the phrase "slave to training points" has appeared as a humorous, albeit somewhat negative, way of calling a criterion needed for graduation or scholarship consideration.

Account named LTBT thinks that training points should be given lightly and moderately so that students can balance between studying and working part-time.

Another user named NN said that the training points are stressful because the number of people participating in the scoring activities is limited. This user shared: "Sometimes I haven't read all the program information, just a few minutes later the registration form is locked because there are enough people registered."

Therefore, some students have found ways to cope to get enough points according to regulations. Due to a very busy schedule and having to work part-time, LTP, a third-year student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, had to ask for a friend's certificate to submit as proof.

"The certificates usually leave the name and student ID blank, so I just need to fill them in. The grading is quite liberal, and the graders don't check whether the students actually participated or not. Students just need to have a certificate with their name on it," said P.

Motivation or pressure?

Participating in extracurricular activities to earn points is a positive thing. However, students should not disregard it and let it affect their health or their regular studies at school.

Achieving 86.5 points for training last semester, NNT, a student of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, said: "Activities that earn many points usually involve participating in organizing programs lasting 4-7 days. I don't have much time, so I will attend talk shows, seminars or music programs organized by clubs in the school to get points. These sessions usually last 4-5 hours, and students must check in at the beginning and end of the session to get 1 point."

In addition, when lacking points, T. will participate in voluntary blood donation because this activity is worth a maximum of 5 points. Although he knows it can affect his health, because he needs training points to consider a scholarship, T. tries to participate.

Similarly, TDB, a third-year student at the International University (Ho Chi Minh City National University), shared that students living in the dormitory also have to participate in the "Green Saturday" activity organized by the management board.

"This is a voluntary environmental activity organized by the dormitory in conjunction with the school to calculate training points for students. However, this activity is held every Saturday morning and requires students to participate. If they do not participate enough days, the dormitory will send the list to the school to deduct training points," B. said.

According to the male student, this deduction of points is unreasonable because most students currently have classes on Saturdays, so it is difficult to arrange time to participate. "I think the dormitory should fix this by changing the time of organizing activities," B. suggested.

Flexible for students to find points easily

Responding to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters, Mr. Nguyen Dang Quang, Secretary of the Youth Union, Deputy Head of Student Affairs Department of International University (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said that the regulations for evaluating training scores are prescribed according to the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training.

"Students are informed about the scoring method at the beginning of the year's civic activities. The score will include many components such as: study score, discipline awareness score, rule compliance score, participation score in movement activities...", Mr. Quang informed.

In order to encourage students to actively participate in activities, the Youth Union will focus on the values that students achieve after participating such as organizational capacity, awareness, attitude in teamwork...

"Students participate in activities with the main purpose of self-development and the more they participate, the higher their bonus points will be. The schedule of the programs will be arranged to suit the students' study schedule and posted publicly on the Union's information pages for students to follow. Currently, due to the focus on digital transformation, some workshops and seminars are also organized online, which makes it easier for students to attend," said Mr. Quang.

In addition, students can also participate in extracurricular activities and submit evidence to be considered for extra points. "Practice points are the motivation for students to experience, develop themselves, become sociable and open. Therefore, in the case of asking for someone else's participation certificate to add 'fake' points, I think there needs to be a handling mechanism," said Mr. Quang.

Directly grading the training of other students, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Khanh, Vice President of the Chemistry Student Association of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said that it is rare to see cases where the average score is not enough. If the score is low, students can improve it by participating in regular volunteer activities in class or at the faculty or school level...

"The tight schedule makes it difficult for students to accumulate practice points. However, the Youth Union, Club, etc. always try to implement support programs at times when students can participate most comfortably. Besides accumulating points, students also learn soft skills such as problem solving, communication, time management, etc. when participating in activities," Khanh shared.

Consider training as a learning experience.

Some students believe that training points should be seen as a way to help students be more proactive in participating in extracurricular activities, creating opportunities to access job opportunities or expand relationships.

Nguyen Hoang Mai, a student of the Faculty of Journalism at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, said: "To balance between studying and training points, you should know how to select activities to participate in. Students should only choose to participate in 1 to 2 clubs that are truly suitable for them, avoiding taking on too many things that will cause their studies to stagnate. Students must also know how to arrange their time reasonably, so that they will have training points, be useful for themselves, and still ensure their studies in class."

Vo Thai An, a student of the Faculty of Journalism at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City, found that training in the university environment is necessary because in addition to studying, students also need to practice ethics and participate in social activities...

"I often participate in many activities such as hair donation, Green Summer, Volunteer Spring, talk shows, workshops... but the main purpose is not just for training points. Therefore, students should consider which activities are suitable for them, useful for themselves and for society, and should not register indiscriminately to avoid wasting time and affecting their studies," Thai An shared.
