Statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training over the years show that, among the 25 training fields, health majors account for only over 6% of the total number of successful candidates, ranking 5th in the training fields with the highest admission results. Specifically, this rate in 2022 accounts for 6.35% and in 2023 accounts for 6.72%. Although not the field with the largest number of successful candidates at the university level, medical training majors are always among the majors leading in admission scores every year.
Looking at the benchmark scores of major health science training schools in countries in 2024, it can be seen that to be admitted to the medical and dental majors, candidates need to achieve an average of about 9 points/subject according to the high school graduation exam scores. For example, at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), the benchmark scores for both medical and dental majors are 27 and above.
Similarly, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy takes the standard score from the high school graduation exam at 27.8 and the maxillofacial exam at 27.35. Thus, to be admitted to the medical program of this school, candidates need to achieve an average of over 9 points per subject according to the B00 group (math, chemistry, biology).
At Hanoi Medical University, the medical major has the highest admission score, ranging from 26.55 to 28.27 points depending on the admission method. Next is the maxillofacial major with admission scores ranging from 25.29 to 27.67. In particular, to be admitted to the medical major with the high school graduation exam score of this school, candidates need to achieve an average of over 9.4 points from the B00 group and candidates must set their first choice when registering for admission.
Many other universities also have a benchmark score of 26 or higher for medical and dental majors in 2024, such as: University of Health Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University), Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine...

Why is medicine always attractive to students?
The irony is that tuition fees for health sciences, especially medicine, are currently very high, in some places reaching nearly 200 million VND/year. In addition, medical students also have to go through a long and arduous learning process. The income of young doctors in public health facilities today is not compatible with the investment of students.
However, medical training programs are still attractive to students in the entrance exam. Faced with this concern, people in the profession share different reasons for this choice.
Answering this question, a doctor working at District 4 Hospital (HCMC) generally stated: "The most important reason comes from the Vietnamese mentality of 'respecting reputation'. It seems that all parents feel very happy if their children study medicine, partly because they feel proud of those around them and partly because they feel secure because there is a doctor in the family."
Regarding income, this doctor asked: "Is the income of doctors really low? The salary in public health facilities may not be high, but doctors are actually more likely to work outside to improve their income."
"Not to mention, the more you work, the higher your doctor's salary will be. After only a period of about ten years of working and studying to develop your expertise, from around the age of 40, when you are mature enough, doctors have the opportunity to create a good income through opening a clinic, working part-time outside, working in international hospitals... The problem of low income is currently recognized with the team working in public health facilities, especially at the lower levels," this person emphasized.
From his own experience and that of his friends, a resident physician at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City gave the reasons. "Initially, when choosing a career, it was simply a love for medical examination and treatment, the desire to become a doctor - a very beautiful image seen in life. For those with good academic performance and high exam scores, being a doctor is often one of the options listed."
"Many people think that doctors are never poor because everyone has the opportunity to open their own clinic. In my opinion, this is an opportunity. Usually, doctors who open their own clinics are big doctors who have a reputation and prestige. Young doctors still work for clinics after hours. Therefore, I believe that most people who choose to study this field of study do so out of a desire to pursue a career that plays a very special role in society," the young doctor frankly expressed.
