The US has provided Ukraine with more than $50 billion in military aid since 2022, but has limited the use of weapons on Ukrainian territory and to cross-border defensive operations.
Mr Zelenskyy announced that guided bombs had killed six people and wounded 97 in Kharkiv on Friday, with more attacks on Saturday. And he said these attacks could only be stopped “by striking Russian military airfields, their bases and Russian logistics”.

Appealing to the US, UK, France and Germany, he said: "We need real and full capability to defend Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. We need both your long-range capability and your long-range artillery and missiles.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who was in Washington with a delegation on Friday and Saturday to meet with US officials and experts, said in an interview aired on CNN that Kiev was showing that Russian airfields were being used to attack Ukrainian cities.
Mr Zelenskyy is expected to make a similar appeal in person next month, when he presents his plan to end the conflict with President Joe Biden at the end of his term in the Oval Office and attends the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.
According to a statement from the Ukrainian authorities, Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak and Mr. Umerov briefed US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on the situation on the battlefield during their first meeting during the visit on Friday.
Currently, Ukraine is still increasing attacks deep into Russian territory, but often only using drones or artillery, instead of the advanced missiles and bombs provided by the US and the West.
In the latest developments, the governor of Belgorod said five people were killed and 46 injured in a Ukrainian attack on the southwestern Russian city of Belgorod on Friday night.
Russian officials also said Ukraine launched a drone attack on Sunday night targeting Moscow and several other Russian regions.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a post on the Telegram messaging app that a drone flying towards Moscow was destroyed in the area around the Russian capital.
Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz said on Telegram that at least 12 drones launched by Ukraine were also destroyed in this border region in southwestern Russia.
Two of the unmanned attack vehicles were also shot down in the Kursk region, Alexei Smirnov, acting governor of the region, which has been partly seized by Ukraine, said on Telegram.
