Ukraine attacks Russian nuclear warning center in Krasnodar

RT quoted Russian Senator Dmitry Rogozin as saying that the US bears direct responsibility for Ukraine's attack on a key component of Russia's "nuclear umbrella", warning that such attacks could lead to the collapse of the entire global nuclear security structure.

According to Senator Rogozin, earlier this week, Ukraine carried out an attack on the nuclear early warning system in the city of Armavir, in the southern Krasnodar Region, located nearly 500 km from the front line. This was also Kiev's first attack on a military facility related to Russia's strategic defense system.

The nuclear early warning center in Krasnodar is now equipped with the Voronezh-DM over-the-horizon early warning radar system, which allows monitoring of space to detect ballistic missile attacks, as well as tracking of aircraft.

The system can detect incoming cruise and ballistic missiles at a range of 6,000 km and can track up to 500 targets.

At the inauguration of the system in 2013, Russian President Vladimir Putin said it would significantly enhance the country's defense capabilities in the southern and southwestern directions.

The complete surveillance network of 10 Voronezh-M/DM radars was completed by Russia in 2017, helping to fill the radar gap in the northwest, southwest, south and southeast of the country, something that even the Soviet Union could not do.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on this information.

Mr. Rogozin said it was highly unlikely that the Ukrainian attack on the radar station in Krasnodar was planned by Kiev alone and certainly involved the US.

Washington has been seeking to gain military superiority over Moscow since the advent of nuclear weapons, but the rivalry has largely been limited to a battle of wits between scientists, strategists and policymakers, the Russian lawmaker said.

Western experts say an attack on a facility in Russia's strategic defense network could escalate the conflict significantly, even raising the risk of using nuclear weapons.

Damage to the Voronezh-DM station in Armavir, even in the short term, would significantly affect Russia's strategic early warning network, causing the country to lose part of its ability to detect the threat from nuclear missiles and reduce its ability to eliminate false alarms.

The Armavir strike also met the conditions for triggering a nuclear retaliation in the doctrine published by the Russian government in 2020, which includes "any attack on a location vital to the Russian military and government, disrupting the response capabilities of nuclear forces."

It is unclear how Moscow will react to the attack on the Armavir site, as well as whether this is the beginning of a Ukrainian campaign targeting strategic Russian military facilities that have little to do with the fighting.
