Hanoi After two weeks of injecting fat-dissolving drugs, a 40-year-old woman developed many unusual lumps on her cheeks, chin, arms, and abdomen, with signs of necrosis.
Three months ago, she heard from an acquaintance that she went to a spa to get fat-dissolving injections to lose weight without surgery. The consultant advised that she only needed one treatment to lose weight immediately, without needing to rest or undergo surgery.
After two weeks, her body developed unusual lumps that felt hard, painful, and uncomfortable to the touch. The cosmetic facility explained that this was due to the slow-acting medication, and that "the lumps will slowly dissolve."
Two months after the injection, lumps and hard pimples increased all over her body; some pimples oozed pus and blood, causing pain. The patient was prescribed antibiotics and pain relievers by the cosmetic facility, but her condition became increasingly worse. Worried, the woman went to Duc Giang General Hospital for examination.
On May 13, Dr. Pham Duy Linh, Department of Plastic Surgery, said that the patient's biceps had many inflammatory lesions measuring 1-2.5cm. There were many hard lumps on both cheeks, double chin, and abdomen, showing signs of abscesses, inflammation, redness, and pus discharge. Ultrasound results revealed infection, abscesses, and a lot of pus discharge.
The surgeon incised the abscesses, cultured them, and cleaned the infection. The patient continued to take antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs after surgery.
After a week, the abscesses no longer oozed fluid and were no longer infected, and the fibroids had shrunk. "However, treating complications from fat-dissolving injections is very difficult, and patients need to be monitored long-term," the doctor said, adding that patients are at risk of bad scars after surgery.

According to Dr. Linh, there are three causes of complications: drugs of unknown origin, incorrect injection techniques, and failure to ensure sterility in injection techniques.
Currently, fat-dissolving injections are not licensed by the Ministry of Health. In addition, users often suffer from local inflammation due to infection. If injected too close to the skin surface, the drug can cause skin ulcers at the injection site. If injected too deeply, there is a risk of necrosis at the injection site and spreading to other areas of the body.
In addition, fat-dissolving injections are all floating around, and when entering the body, they will cause very strong reactions, causing inflammation, swelling at the site, discharge, pus, and necrosis. In some cases, the drugs cannot be controlled, causing muscle atrophy, skin depression, and loss of aesthetics.
Doctors recommend that the cause of fat accumulation is due to an inappropriate diet and exercise regimen over a long period of time. Therefore, people need to adjust their diet along with exercise. If there is a need for weight loss intervention, patients should go to specialized cosmetic surgery hospitals for advice on choosing the appropriate treatment method.
