On May 10, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced the number of candidates registering for the 10th grade public school entrance exam in 2024.
Doan Ket High School, Hai Ba Trung District, immediately attracted attention when it fell into the group of 10 schools with a competition ratio of less than 1. That is, the number of candidates registering for the first choice was lower than the enrollment quota.
The remaining 9 schools are all in suburban districts including: Minh Quang, Bat Bat, Nguyen Quoc Trinh, Dong My, Dai Cuong, Tu Lap, Bac Luong Son, Luu Hoang and Hong Thai.
The quota assigned by the Department is 675, but the number of applications for first choice (NV) that Doan Ket High School received is 554.
This is not difficult to understand because in 2023, the standard score to enter Doan Ket School is 40 points, among the schools with the highest standard scores in the city. This score increased by 1.75 points compared to 2022.
In previous years, the school's admission score fluctuated on average between 7.2-7.65 points/subject.
The continuous increase in benchmark scores over the years is part of the reason for the school's "shocking drop" in benchmark scores this year.
The question is, why is it that Doan Ket School, which is in the top 10 schools with the lowest competition rates in the city, lost 16 points but Bat Bat School increased 8 points?
The reason lies in the total number of wishes.

As mentioned above, Doan Ket school has 554 NV1 candidates, 121 less than the target. The school also has only 389 NV2 candidates and 21 NV3 candidates. The total number of candidates who have made their wishes is 964.
Meanwhile, Bat Bat school has 425 NV1 candidates, 25 less than the target. But NV2 has 1,397 applications, NV3 has 1,760. The total number of candidates registering their wishes is 3,582.
With the admission principle of considering parallel and equal consideration between wishes, this school, which is always at the bottom of the Hanoi benchmark rankings, has more opportunities to select students than Doan Ket school.
Besides, the "inflation" of benchmark scores last year made students, teachers and parents look for a safe option. And they chose schools with very low benchmark scores.
Those are the main reasons why Bat Bat school increased by 8 points, from 17 points in 2023 to 25 points in 2024, escaping the top 10 schools with the lowest standard scores.
Taking the place of Bat Bat is Doan Ket school, a school located in the central district of the capital.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Hai, Principal of Doan Ket High School, said that out of 675 successful candidates, only about 100 candidates scored below 30 points. There was only 1 candidate with a score of 23.75.
Thus, the quality of the school's entrance candidates is still guaranteed to be mostly good students or better.
The school said that although this is the school year with the lowest standard score, this is not a cause for concern.
"Parents will have an objective view of the school based on many factors and criteria, especially the quality of training over many years, not based on the benchmark scores of one school year.
For students with weaker academic performance, the school will have a training plan to help them catch up with their friends," said Ms. Hai.
Sharing about the solution to prevent benchmark scores from fluctuating too much like this year, Ms. Hai said that "this problem should be left to managers".
A high school teacher who asked to remain anonymous expressed his opinion: "In light of the benchmark scores of Doan Ket school this year, I think about consulting and guiding students to register their wishes at secondary schools.
Perhaps the teacher looked at the benchmark scores of the previous school year to advise on choosing the right choice for the next school year.
While the correct basis should incorporate the benchmark of at least 5 years in correlation with the benchmark of the whole city.
At the same time, teachers also need to evaluate students' abilities at a general level, such as their ranking in the entire school. They should not only compare students' practice test scores with the test questions set by the school and district with the previous year's benchmark scores.
This will limit the number of students who have enough points to pass top schools but only register at lower-ranked schools.
